How to define a corner chamfer end mill?

In the tool library, how do you define a end mill that has a corner chamfer? It's easy to define a corner radius. Which is close, I know...

If I define it as a chamfer mill with the values of the end mill, it just breaks things.

@Tbaker25 do you mean an end cutting endmill that has chamfers on the tips, similar to a bull-nose endmill, except flats instead of radii?

Or do you mean a tool that might come to a near sharp point?

 

If you mean the latter, there is the option for that in the "Create New Tool" dialog

Edit: Actually, this would work if you also meant the former, I believe

Edit #2: There is also the option to make a taper mill. If you are trying to blend to a small chamfer in the part you are working on, you will need to select the bottom edge of the chamfer to control the tool

If he's talking about this:

 

 

There's no way to make that a functional tool in Fusion 360 yet. A chamfer mill won't let you cut above the chamfer edge (like a mill/drill can), and as best I can tell, you can't get a workable result for this with a taper mill either. Even in HSMWorks I had to make a form tool to use a drill/mill for milling and chamfering in one tool, and of course we don't have form tools in Fusion yet (although oddly enough they can be imported from HSM in tool libraries).

Yes, that pic form Maritool is excatly what I mean. And I found out the hard way defining it as a chamfer mill causes it to not work so great! 🙂

 

Something that would be nice to have in the future. I'll post it in the idea station.

Form tools are on there, and probably the easiest solution in the long run that will benefit the most users. I REALLY wish they'd implement a sketch-based option (IE sketch the tool on the right where for now it gives the user a representation of the tool) and revolve.

So the issue is actaully not "how can I create one" it is "how do we get the 3D toolpaths to use it"

 

Specifically it shoulds like you want Adapive clearing to support the use of chamfer mills.

You obviously know better than I. My impression is that, when the tool is defined as a chamfer mill, the cutting pass will not use any part of the mill other than the 45 deg chamfer. Since this is a full end mill with just a corner chamfer, I don't want to use it as a chamfer mill. It's just another version of a bull-nose end mill.

So I don't know if its a problem with the pass or the tool definition to make that work.

The issue is in the Adaptive clearing Stratagy and how it manages stock to leave for a tool with a chamfer on the bottom of it.

Can you raise an enhancement ticket for this please @al.whatmough lots of the hi-speed roughing tools have this profile.

In the meantime @Tbaker25 the only compromise is to define it as a bullnose, with the chord length of the bull radius matching the chamfer length. Meaning the flat on the bottom of the tool is the same diameter. That will get the stock calculation for stepovers, pretty close, but not perfect.

As a machininst, I would think the same thing.

 

However, the math guys that work on the kernel tell me it is a much harder problem.

 

I'll see if I can get one of them to chime in and explain why.

Chamfer tool is special because when applying stock to leave we actually end up with 2 corners, a lower and an upper. For all the other supported tools a single tip corner is sufficient to make sure stock to leave is applied correctly. Chamfer support just complicates stuff but is technically possible to do but it does require some work.

I use a lot of mill with chamfer, little chamfer of course, not all the mill have a corner radius or 90°!

Has this ever been sorted out yet? I am trying to load new endmills with a small corner chamfer into the library and have found the same issue.

Why is this even an issue, as corner chamfer endmills are as common as bull nose mills. It should really just be an option on the straight end mill to have a corner chamfer.

It is really poor that it cannot be defined
