How about a Tool Library for CNC Wood Working

Has anyone created a Tool Library for Fusion 360 that has woodworking bits rather than metal working bits? It would be nice if a wood router bit company would create a library of their tools for Fusion 360 so we woodworkers would not have to create them from scratch and then tweek them over and over to get the best efficiency out of the bit.

Well,

The shapes of the bits is kind of the same right?

And the feedrates and surface speed don't look like anything for metal machining either.

That is being worked on but I think it's hard to make a good guess on that since, your machine, the setup, the batch of material, carbide type all effect these speeds and feeds.

So it will always need tweaking to your own liking. But that's why you can make a library of your own tools.

It would be easier if wood workers had a basic library as a choice rather than metal materials, and metal machining bits, that have to be completely re-worked. As an example a round over bit instead of only a choice of chamfer bits.

it's being worked on we should have it by the end of the year, it's one of the very hard projects they are working on, it will only be relised when it works with apple and windows plus cloud and more than likely Inventor HSM.

yea it may come before that, I hope it does, but somethings are very hard what we would think are not are if they only had fusion for windows they would be way a head of where they are but there are 3 aliments to any change they make in fusion, I have given up asking most question about bits that fusion needs it's all comeing in the end in 5 years fusion will have everything you will ever need in it.

I agree with Daniels thoughts. 

But I for one am glad fusion is duel platform. 

Dispite my recent issues with the Mac version of the mach3 post. 

I have to say that having a cad system that works in Mac is a major plus. 

The future is cross platform. The fusion licence model is the one that will win out. 

 

My my solidworks reseller called me the other day to warn me that if I wanted to go back on maintenance I had to do it before January 1st. Because desult systems has decided to back charge for every year the maintenance has lapsed. So for me that is the cost of another seat. 

 

I told them thanks I will stick with fusion. 

He quickly hung up after that!! 

 

I can wait for the wood componants in fusion!

@Anonymous if you have idea's for wood work stuff just post them in the idea station and ask in the API section. there are some woodwork stuff in there now you just have to look through to find them.

you can do cabinet making stuff quite well now where you only have to do cabinets based on shelf and divider amont and you can make the cabint design's into shelf's and book case's by just changeing some number's full on paramater base modleing.

it take's a bit to get the prosses down once you work out the best way to do it, its quite quick to do. 

yes you have to manualy nest it or get the nesting script from the API section of the forum.

No it has not been done and don't do it like plastic.

 

If the manufacturer does not have liture for what the cutters speed and feed is try and finding a speed and feed chart for wood

Wood is in the hard basket, If and when they add wood into the tool examples it will never be correct and they would have to use a tool company's defaults it would only be a starting point that a user will have to correct to the tools they use, yes it's a pain you just need to ask if what you have is correct in this forum.

 

And yes it would be good if they have wood in the examples

yeah, right now Ive been using the tool from aluminum tool bits. and kind of have to guess the feed rate as well, the feed rate for aluminum generally is good, could be speed up sometimes.

Actually, they have a group of people working on the tool library as a whole.

But sadly it's taken years to get to a proper version of a new library.

So we all are in the same half-baked tool library for now.

@daniel_lyall That is interesting. High Stainless has similar feed rates. 

Can you imagine going through that stuff with a straight walled cutter? Ouch. 

This is why I say that the comment about Tool geometry is false. 

I have great results running a standard straight wall. They are my back up tool. 

But when I found the 7* helixes. In two flutes. Hit damm can they chew through wood. 

Also I found using lens type round nose bits for finishing far better. Get you past that whole 0 rpm thing at mid piont. 

So I got some 6mm two flutes with 20mm radius. Running them at 8000 rpm was a joy. Not only because i didn't need ear protection while it ran. The ridge issue had almost gone. 

 

But then most people I guess will just be routing.

It's the get the heat out in the chips with stainless you harden it with wood you set it on fire.

 

The normal router bit's work fine in cnc routers, it's silly useing the fancy cutters in stuff like mdf unless it has melamine on it then you have to, one of the guys I help in the US a router bit works better then a wood end mill of the same size.

 

it's only when it comes to the small cutters a Aluminum (unless theirs a wood cutter available) cutter is needed what has the high helix and they eat through the wood like it's not there, I just did a guess as to the recipe for them and it works, and yer it's quieter. 

 

 

I think that is just down to how long I have been useing a small and big router.

 

If someone just thinks about what they are cutting and has a look at what it's hardness is then compares it to Aluminum then looks up depth and width of cut you can scale it up you then have a look at the feeds of stainless and put them together it gets you close to bang on, this is only if there is no wood based feed and speed available.

 

This is half the reasion why toolstoday is a very a recommended places to get your cutters from they have it all on most of the cutters they sell. When I order tools it's from there if Scott does not have the size needed, he charges the same for what he has for wood.

and, after two years of initial question, there is no library or group of tools for woodworkers...

 

I agree that some of the metal tools may be used, with change of feeds and speeds, but what about V bits? Sure, they can be done as a form mill, but then, can they be used in engraving?
