help with Morphed Spiral settings

Hi I am new to Fusion cam and trying to figure out the best settings for Morphed Spiral settings to carve a large contour in wood . If i use Vectric it's over a 24 hour job so it seems like Fusion would give me a more optimized Toolpath. I am carving wood with a 1/4 ball end mill .   My current settings  are attached with a simulation.  Any help to determine settings on the "passes" menu would be appreciated.  Or links to tutorials on this.  Thanks so much Screen Shot 2019-03-12 at 7.10.55 PM.pngScreen Shot 2019-03-12 at 7.10.33 PM.png

Hi @tdcambridge,

 

Thanks for raising your query onto Autodesk forum.

 

The total machining time will depend on the cutter used, stepover used for that cutter and Feedrate. Make sure that you are selecting a tool of 1/4" ball nose from the tool library for the material which is close to the wood. I will suggest you to use the tool from Sample > Plastic in tool library. This will give you the feedrate close to the feedrate which can be used for wood.

Also from the image it is not clear how deep is the texture on the wood. If you wish to have multiple stepdown then try applying the Axial Offset passes. Also you have rightly select the Smoothing option this will allow your machine to run faster and smoothly. 

 

You can check the machining time for a toolpath by right clicking on it and selecting context menu Machining Time

Seth, Thanks it's a 4x 8 wood cnc router.  The material is a slab of hardwood. The size of the stock is 26 x 36 x 2" 

 

I attach file.  Wondering how many Z passes I do for this etc.  There are so many options it's difficult to figure out what's correct.  Best,  Tony

Hi @tdcambridge,

 

Thanks for supplying the file. I had a look at the texture you wish to machine and have a few suggestions for machining this as follow,

 

  1. As the texture you wish to machine doesn't have intricate details to machine, the 1/4" ball nose tool you are using seems to be small for machining this. I will suggest you to try using a bigger diameter tool to machine this as this will help you in increasing the stepover value slightly but mainly this will make sure that there is no major load on the tool while machine due to it bigger diameter.
  2. Regarding the stepdown.  After looking at the file, the stock from which you wish to machine this, I will suggest not to use Axial offset passes in Morphed Spiral instead use a Endmill cutter of say 1/2" diameter to rough the majority of stock and then have a single finishing pass of Morphed Spiral with a ball nose tool.
