Flip 2-side milling and trialing the Steep & Shallow

I am trying to mill this USMC emblem for my Dad and am running into some errors. Fully disclosure...this is my first time to use the steep and shallow function. I figured it best to resolve some of the complicated geometry.

 

It looks like it solves but when I go to simulate I get stock collision and and rapid movement into stock errors. I tried to order it to get it to cut by Z depth but am not sure what could be the issue.

Hi

 

Steep and shallow is a FINISHING toolpath, you will need to rough the part out with 3D adaptive or Pocket first before attempting finishing.

 

Try that first and then see how you get on

I think the 3d adaptive pass helped! I added a long reach down cut to avoid some collision errors but there are some areas that still hit the stock. Also the fidelity is not great...

Man that's awesome - thank you. Didn't think about the ball nose pass to smooth things out!

 

What's your preferred finishing method on this one...steep and shallow or the parallel? Obviously one requires more $ 🙂

I've always finished parts like this with Parallel with perpendicular passes, It does the job fine and is a bit quicker.

 

If you want a bit better surface finish steep and shallow will be better but that's probably only relevant on metals.
