Needing help creating a custom tool for cam simuation. Is there a way to take a solid model (in this case downloaded from iscars website and imported into fusion) and use it as a tool cam simulation can use accurately? Ive done the 2d sketch to form mill process before. Im trying to use an iscar multitooth threadmill and wondering if there is an easier and more effective way than creating a 2d sketch to  "form tool".

You can define a known pitched threadmill as just as standard tool definition within the Tool Library

one of the reasons I'm not going this route is because the threadmill I'm using is a modular inserted one. the insert has a straight section at the very end before the first tooth. I can mentally keep track of this detail to make sure the threadmill is starting far enough down and so on but if I can just use the downloaded detailed model that would be nice. NYC CNC has a video how to download a tool holder model and import it into the library but that's only for a holder. Fusion knows the difference between a tool and a holder so if I do this with the threadmill I have it wont let me create a toolpath with it because it thinks its only the holder.

No, we don't currently support uploading of 3D/solid tools into the tool library. 

 

Do you mind sharing a link to the tool here? Not sure I'm following why the straight part of the insert would prevent you from using the standard thread mill definition. If you are running into shortcomings with the thread mill definition, please share those as well!

no reason you can't just define it as a standard threadmill and add to the comments or name to add "-.1 Z" or w/e the flat length is.

I can run it as a standard threadmill. I was just asking from a convenience stand point. Yes I can define it with the available threadmill tab and then just cheat it down the extra amount necessary and make it work. I've actually already done this for the toolpath I'm going to use. I'm going to be threadmilling a 2.125-12 hole 8" through a block of iron. The threadmill is a carbide shank with a screw on head and a single insert with 14 teeth for this particular pitch. The other insert I have is a 5 pitch with 5 teeth and that one has a notable flat area before the first tooth. The ability to create a tool from downloaded model would just be a nice feature to have so the simulation is as accurate as possible.

I'm assuming you mean to define a non-cutting tip / piece of geometry below the teeth?
If not, can you explain more of what you mean or give an example?

correct. in the picture I attached you can see on the right side of the pic (end of tool) how the first tooth is not at the end of the tool. The hole I'm threading is a through hole and full threaded. Using fusions available threadmill builder is fine I just have to make sure I'm staring deep enough to ensure the threads are all the way through and not a partial thread or unthreaded section due to the section of insert at the end of the tool not having a thread. When I setup the tool the length offset will be from the very end of the tool with the first insert tooth being a distance up form the z-0 point of the tool. I could also create a form tool which I've done for other tools in the past. I just wanted to know if there was a quick easy way to use a model since many manufactures often exact models of their tools. Doing this would save time sketching a form tool and provide some comfort having an accurate simulation with that exact tool vs "cheating" the tool down farther and keeping track of offsets and such.

Honestly, just punch the offset length somewhere in the tool description or save it as a cutting template. Depending on your gauge, the "lead in" to getting thread depth will vary tool to tool anyway. If the hole is through, you should try starting below the last face anyway.

I have this same issue, but with Iscar's pico boring tool for the lathe. I also went and did the NYCCNC tutorial on tool holders, and form tool isn't appropriate since it is for a lathe. Any tips?
