CAM Simulation crashing regularly

While running a CAM simulation on a particular part and toolpath, Fusion 360 inevitably crashes. So far, this occurs at least once out of every two simulations. Fusion will hang, parts of the menus will go black, the spinning "thinking" mouse pointer icon will appear, and it will remain like that indefinitely (>30 minutes) until I manually kill the program. There is no error dialog popup. The location in the toolpath at which is freezes is not consistent.

System Specs:

  • Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-10510U
  • CPU Memory: 16 GB
  • GPU: Nvidia Geforce MX230 w/ 461.09 driver (and Intel Integrated GPU, which is not used for Fusion)
  • GPU Memory: 8 GB

Fusion Graphics Settings:

  • Driver: DirectX11
  • Transparency Effect: Better Performance
  • Limit effects during navigation to maintain framerate: On
  • Limit effects when graphics memory is low: On

Fusion Preview Features:

  • HighDPIScaling: Off
  • Blend Strategy: On
  • Continue Rest Machining for Milling: On
  • In-Process Stock - Mesh Check Safety: Off
  • In-Process Stock as Remaining Stock: Off

Fusion Graphics Diagnostic Menu:

  • Limit effects to optimize for performance: On

Simulation Settings:

  • Mode: Standard
  • Colorization: Comparison
  • Tolerance: 0.002

Toolpath Operations:

3D Pocket:

  • Rest Machining: From previous operations
  • Use Morphed Spiral Machining: On
  • Radial Stock to Leave: 0.02

2D Contour:

  • Chamfer: On
  • Nothing else special

I've played with all of the settings above, tried OpenGLCore and DirectX9 & 11 for the driver, turned on and off every toggle. At this point I believe I have permutated all of the possible combinations.

I cannot upload the full model at this time, but I can provide screenshots. Any help would be great, as this is costing my company money.

Additional Information:

  • The model is natively created in Fusion360

I see that you are working online, if you have a poor Internet connection/WiFi then you can sometimes get these sort of problems.

Have you tried working offline ??

Can you upload your f3d file to see if anyone else has the same issue with the file ?

No, I have good working high speed internet, good idea to check for that though.

I cannot upload the file at this time; I'm hoping to at least get some info about how I can better diagnose the problem. Because the Fusion "error dialog" isn't popping up, I don't even get the debugging package that it assembles.

It's odd that you wouldn't get the error dialog. Does it just hang like your "Capture2"? Or does Fusion actually shut down?

I assume you looked for the crashinfo.zip, or whatever file that it would typically write to %temp% when it crashes.

Can you try to update your graphics driver? Looks like there's a 461.92 version available now?

I thought so as well. It just hangs like in Capture2.

I have, but only through a Windows search. Going to check it manually after I get back to my computer, thanks for the tip that it is stored in %temp%, not in the Fusion runtime directory. I'm a native Linux user, always forget about the Windows environment dirs.

I have been considering it, but didn't want to go that route until I've exhausted the simpler options. There isn't an OEM upgrade path for this machine, so I'd have to do it manually. If I can't resolve it today, I'll try the driver upgrade. Thank you for looking up that for me.

Just a thought, looking at your images again it appears that your WiFi is only doing it`s send and recieve in Kbps (48 and 24) if that is true then that is seriously slow, goes back to the old AOL "Dial up" Modems that did 56 Kbps on a good day!!

Your actual internet speed may be good up to your Hub/Router but if your WiFi is poor from that to your computer then that could be the "bottleneck" !!

Just as an example I can work online using WiFi from my Android `phone to my PC @ 72/72 Mbps

Again, I appreciate your suggestion, but I've been a systems programmer for about 15 years (and a CAM user for less than three months unfortunately!), and I promise my network is working just fine. What you're seeing there is the chart scaled so that the highest data point displayed is at 100% of the chart size, and as I pre-cached all of my files there is hardly anything to transfer at this point, except for analytics and API calls.

Something that is noteworthy however, is that when Fusion stops working, it never uploads a save file, never does anything but sit in purgatory. I believe there's a pretty serious uncaught exception occurring here...

Could you see about creating a dump file of the Fusion360 process when in this situation? You can access this from Task Manager. You can zip and send me the dump file at jeff DOT pek AT autodesk DOT com.

Thanks!

Jeff,

I appreciate all of your help. I haven't responded because ever since the last Fusion update, I haven't been able to get the same error to occur. I'm going to assume that this problem was fixed, and close this issue.

They do mention in the changelog that they fixed some issues related to CAM simulation rendering, and this is what likely solved my problem.

Thanks again!
