Basic 2D Contour on angled radius

I'll be honest, I am not sure the BEST way to describe the tool path I desire. 

 

Attached there should be a little example part I made. On the flat side, the tool path is generated to cut a straight bath the length of the radius. You can see on the taper side the tool path wraps back into the part with no error. On my actual part, a little more complex with a radius tangent to the taper, Fusion puts the direction of the tool path in the opposite direction, and I cannot change the direction. I tried to capture an image of this, but as soon as I click capture image the selection screen goes away as well as my tool path and arrows. So I made this little part as an example.

Hi @M&GToolWorks,

 

The 2D toolpath strategies are generally not what we call "model-aware", including 2D Contour. This means that you need to explicitly define where you want to machine.

 

For your issue, what I did was projected the geometry onto a 2D Sketch, then used that to drive the 2D Contour toolpath. See the image here:

That seems like a poor solution in my opinion. Why would the 2D contour not be driven by the model geometry? To go back and re sketch the information already sketched, seems counter intuitive, needless to say should a change be made to the model, when machined the part will be incorrect. 

 

None of the 3D functions gave a satisfactory result either. 

 

Do people normally make sketches to machine geometry with Fusion? That seems backward from other CAM programming software I have used.

Just a thought, have you tried a "Trace" strategy?

Might work, it will follow the edge for you and the tool can be offset for either "Climb" or "Conventional" direction of cut Smiley Happy

The part is being cut 90 degrees of how you have it shown. (rotation on X axis) 

 

Trace does not work as the tool comes back into the part for some reason.

@M&GToolWorks Unfortunately, the workflow that @balsmen showed is the way to accomplish what you want to do today.

 

With that said, we don't believe this to be an optimal solution.

 

In cases like this, you should be able to select the "silhouette" of the part.  In fact, we added a feature in HSMWorks to streamline the process of creating this sketch.  However, that was not a parametric solution and again one step from what we really want.

 

Our goal is to extend selections to allow the selection of silhouette geometry.

 

Well, this doesn't help, I hope it clarifies the situation.

Ah, right, my mistake, didn`t read everything properly, my apologies, I will have another look at it but from other posts it would appear that you do have your answer albeit not exactly the optimal one but an answer nonetheless Smiley Happy

Well, didn`t think I would get anything better, just a little different workaround that`s all.

 

What I did was to just create a line across the centre of the model and do a "split", I was then able to select the edge of the solid to get the contour shape in the direction you wanted, might be a trifle easier but still not optimal for sure Smiley Sad

Had to alter the stock size for the simulation but not a big deal, as I said, no better really, just different, file attached Smiley Happy

Rob, I appreciate the additional insight. This definitely worked. I can select just the flat and the taper and get what I would consider as a correct tool path. I have never used the split function, so I supposed that is yet another thing to learn. It will be interesting to see how that effects the contours selected above and below the split.
