3D Toolpath Machining Boundary confinement violation?

Both 3D Adaptive and, to a greater extent, 3D Contour appear to violate the machining boundary specified. 

 

What am I missing on machining boundaries, or is this an issue with toolpath generation?

When I simulate it, it stays within the boundaries. Is your video driver up to date?

Here's a screencast of the tool paths merrily chomping away outside the machining containment boundary.

 

@johnswetz1982 is this different than what you see? This is running on a MacBook Pro running MacOS 11, so the video driver is as up-to-date as it gets.

It does not leave the boundary other than a silly-looking loop on the contour toolpath.

Dan, the images you posted represent the center of the tool, right? But the cutting edge of the tool is outside the boundary, even though the tool containment specifies "tool inside boundary".

 

When I simulate, the cut extends well beyond the boundary. Are you seeing the same thing?

 

And as for that silly loop, well, that is a violation of the containment as well, just more egregious.

I think your view is set up to use perspective and is not an orthographic view. Try checking that. I think you are getting camera lens distortion.

Yes, nice catch. I think that may account for some (or all) of what I see
as toolpath overreach. I will redo the example with the sketch plane for
the boundary at the top of the stock and take another look at this. Thanks.

Switching to ortho reveals that 3D Adaptive confines itself to the specified machining area, but 3D contour still has confinement violation issues.

Dan, I see that you removed the lead-ins and lead-outs on the 3D-Contour operation, which then conforms to the machining boundary confinment. Thanks. 

 

However,  shouldn't it be expected that 3D-Contour (indeed, 3D tool paths in general) keep tool movement including lead-ins and lead-outs within the machining boundary? And, if that's not feasible then shouldn't there be a diagnostic saying leads-ins or lead-outs violate the machining boundary?

Yes it should stay inside the boundary and yes it should have a error report they are still adding proper error reporting in.
