2D Contour Leaves Stock

Hello all,

 

i am having a problem with 2D Contour operation leaving stock on the upper section of a pocket as if the pocket would have a taper, and i am not sure what is the cause.

 

Is it how it is designed? is it a bug or i am simply overlooking something??

 

Also what would be the best strategy for finishing the fillet?

 

(I am aware that i need to rough out the pocket first and then finish it with 2D contour)

That's because it IS leaving stock. The walls of that feature are perpendicular to the top of the part and your WCS alignment. When you tip it at an angle to machine that feature in the manner you are, it now presents those walls at an angle to the axis of the tool

Does it need to be accurate to the model?

There's a bunch of toolpaths that will do this quite efficiently with a ball endmill; Parallel, 3D Contour, Flow, Steep and Shallow, the list is long. Since you're now moving into 3D toolpath territory, you can decide if you want to remain using tool orientation or not.

Its a funnel with open tolerances so ~ +/- 0.1mm. Would trace work with the vertical walls without tool orientation?

Yep, as long as you have correct length of cut and are using a ball endmill with the proper radius
