Modern UI: Filter view suggestions

Modern UI: Filter view suggestions

A few suggestions to improve filter views in the Modern UI (I appreciate it is still a work-in-progress):

  • Clarity is poor; no visible column division makes interface difficult to use
  • Where field content is longer than can be displayed in filter view column width, is it possible to display ellipsis at the right of the column? I do like the hover to show the full text as a tooltip though.
  • Bring back the refresh button on filter view
  • Button to toggle between Full View and Split View should be on left hand side (adjacent to descriptor / where list appears) to reduce mouse travel
  • Setting up or changing filter views is less intuitive than before; filters can only be set up on visible fields (I believe this has already been raised)
  • Our preview tenant allows the split view to be resized, but our live tenant doesn't. Hopefully the ability to resize will be kept..
  • The list of user-defined filters is no longer alphabetically sorted, this is not an improvement.

Thanks,

Ross

Some more suggestions/feedback on filter views:

  • No ability to edit filter view in split mode
  • Item create button is not visible on full view, only split or list views

I want to vote most of the bullets up but feel like this should be broken into smaller ideas. But also realize that that would be annoying to write 10+ separate ideas. Smiley Wink

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. We are working on some of these items, and once I have more info I'll share with you.

By the way,  if you click the breadcrumb here, it refreshes the list.

John, I know, I did think this too but didn't want to spam the forum Smiley Indifferent

@AstroRossD ,

Coming back to this, wanted to close the loop, replies inline:

  1. Clarity is poor; no visible column division makes interface difficult to use
I'll relay the feedback to the UX team - to be clear, are you talking about vertical, dividing lines between the columns?
  2. Where field content is longer than can be displayed in filter view column width, is it possible to display ellipsis at the right of the column? I do like the hover to show the full text as a tooltip though.
    This has been implemented.
  3. Bring back the refresh button on filter view
    Already covered that above.
  4. Button to toggle between Full View and Split View should be on left hand side (adjacent to descriptor / where list appears) to reduce mouse travel
We do not have plans to change this as of now.
  5. Setting up or changing filter views is less intuitive than before; filters can only be set up on visible fields (I believe this has already been raised)
Yes, and the bottom-line is that while I understand the current approach takes way more clicks compared to Classic, it also easily allows for using AND and OR operators within the same column. That said, there's a plan for an enhancement in the future to allow for typing queries, similar to other systems.
  6. Our preview tenant allows the split view to be resized, but our live tenant doesn't. Hopefully the ability to resize will be kept..
    This has been implemented.
  7. The list of user-defined filters is no longer alphabetically sorted, this is not an improvement.
I would like to hear opinions from other folks here, because we got feedback from some other customers that they actually prefer the way it is today (ordered by creation). I'm debating actually adding a control in the UI allowing the user to pick what he/she/they prefer.
  8. No ability to edit filter view in split mode
    This has been implemented.
  9. Item create button is not visible on full view, only split or list views
This has been implemented (click the [...] button in the item header).

I definitely want to hear your (and others) feedback on #7.

Thanks,

Giliar

Hi Giliar,

Thanks for the response, and for the implementation of many of the suggestions.

For the outstanding ones:

1. I think the interface has improved since this was posted, the addition of ellipsis for truncated text keeps it clear.

5. I still think the ability to edit the filters for non-visible columns would be an improvement. Adding a column to the view only to add a filter, then removing it feels long-winded. Other than this, the new interface for filter view creation is great.

7. My preference would be for alphabetical sorting, although if the option was there to switch between that and chronological it would satisfy both groups. Alphabetical seems most logical when there are a lot of views set up, i.e. enough to require scrolling. On that note, it would be good if the view list allowed scrolling within it rather than requiring the whole page to be scrolled - maybe that's for another separate suggestion post.

Best regards,

Ross

@giliar.defriesperez Thanks for coming back and updating this. Here are my comments.

5. I agree with @AstroRossD . It would be really nice if we didn't have to add a column just to add/remove/edit a filter and then remove it again. Perhaps we could click on the green filter button to edit the filter directly? I'm sure it's much easier said than done though. In the screen shot you'll see that the Request Completion Date is not visible in the view but is filtered. So we have to add the column, make the filter change, remove the column.

7. I don't have a preference but would lean towards alphabetical if I had a really long list. Alphabetical also allows you to prefix a view name so you could group them together. However, I think the best option is to allow the user to decide with an on/off toggle. Like you have with compact view. Except it would toggle alphabetical on or off. But again... easier said than done.

Status changed to: Implemented

Hi @john.denner @AstroRossD ,

We delivered an enhancement to #7 - you can now sort the list of views alphabetically, ascending or descending order, or by creation date.

We are working on separate enhancement for #5, and we hear you loud and clear.

Thanks,

Giliar
