Modern UI Enforcing Field Length in Calculated Fields

Ran into a very tricky problem when switching to the Modern UI. Calculated fields in the Modern UI enforce the field length. The classic UI does not.

I had to dig around use the browser dev tools to finally find the problem. Anyone else run into this?

Hello @john.denner,

Thank you for taking time in contacting Autodesk Forums and Support.   Based on description this matter is only occurring when using the Modern UI the workspace works fine while working in Classic UI, is this true?

Correct. The group of three posts I made all work fine in Classic but not Modern.

That's odd John; for our tenant the requirement to fill in a field length for a computed field isn't there.

This is true for both our main tenant (classic) and for our preview tenant (Modern)

Same here. Not required in either UI but after switching to Modern it's now enforcing whatever is greyed out (not required). It worked after I removed the formula, upped the field length, then drooped the formula back in.

I have no problem fixing it, it was the fact that it just started failing almost every save/edit and not giving any reason why until I dug around in the dev tools and sifting through the api responses.

I think this happens when you initially define the field as a regular attribute and then switch to a computed field.

Hello @john.denner,

Thank you for contributing to the Autodesk Forums.  In review Autodesk engineers have documented this behavior as described.   The development team has logged this item and will review computed fields to ensure they skip validations such as Field Length in future.   Thank you for bringing this to our attention and allowing us to drive success.
