Behavior of Uncontrolled section on revision controlled item

In my revision controlled workspace I have a section with "Uncontrolled" text fields.

I want to be able to modify these fields at any time before and after a revision has been issued.

However, it does not behave exactly as I expected.

When I modify one of these fields after release it still creates a new Working Revision.

Why the new Working Revision.

Thanks

Sten

Hi Sten,

The way the system behaves, for good or bad, is that any changes in an uncontrolled section of the LATEST RELEASE of an item is carried forward also to the Working Revision of the item. This may or may not be what you expect, but the assumption is that if the Latest Release is changed, then the Working Revision should change too.

Ok,

In this case it is not what I would expect.

I noticed when I used the new "automatic add children" feature in the change
order. It pulled in a lot of items I did not expect to have been changed. At
a closer look I could see that the only change to the Working Revision was a
"Uncontrolled" field, which was actually made on the latest release.

I had to click revert on the Working Revision to avoid revising the part.
Clicking revert removed the need to revise, but didn't actually change
anything in the Working Revision. My "uncontrolled" change still carries
forward.

It would make sense if my Working Copy had already been modified, but not in
this case where the Working Copy is identical to the latest release.

Hi Sten,

I tested the following workflow and was not able to reproduce this problem:

  1. Start with an item that has a release and for which there are no differences between Working and Release (no Revert button)
  2. Make a change into an uncontrolled field in the Released revision and Save
  3. The change is propogated to the Working Revision

==> BUT the Revert button does not show up. Meaning that the change to the uncontrolled section in the released revision does not show up as a difference between Working and Released

Is it possible that there was some other difference between Working and Released? Remember, changes could be in any Tab including e.g. Attachments. If this is not the case and you are able to reproduce this issue, please contact customer support to report it as a bug.

Ok. Good.

I guessing that the reason I saw it was related to another issue I had a while back. One of my scripts accidentally caused bunch of new working revisions for my parts.

Back then I manually went in and reverted all the changes. Maybe the revert left something in there that made it behave incorrect in my case.

Ill keep an eye out in the future.
