How to convert a mesh to solid?

Hello guys,

Please help me convert a mesh back to a solid where where it came from. So i had a solid file and I converted it into a mesh using the convert tool. I wanted to convert the solid back to the solid where it came from but it just refuses or I don't know how to do that.

I tried to convert back the mesh to a solid body using the convert tool and when using the faceted type it gives me a faceted solid and when I try the prismatic it crashes and when I try the organic tool it gives me a solid surface body which is in the form of a quad solid surface. But what I want is to reverse back the mesh to the solid where it was first converted to a mesh. Please help me do this and feel free to see the attachment below. And also please feel free to ask if you have any questions for me. Thank you and I really appreciate your help!!

Hi @pr1743

Thanks for posting your questions. A couple questions for you.

  1. Could you attach the Fusion file?
  2. Did you turn on the Product Design Extension that gives you the Organic mesh conversion? Here is a link to a video that walks through the Mesh Methods, starts around 6:30

Thanks,

-Dan

Hi,
Thank you for the reply. Yes, please find the F3d mesh file for the base below. Please help me turn it back to the solid how it was before. And, yes I did turn on the product design extension.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask me

Hi @pr1743 Do you still have your native Fusion file before you created your STL file? if so, that would be a great place to make your changes.

Here is a tutorial that shows how to convert a mesh file to a solid file.

Hi @pr1743

I created Face Groups and I was able to convert the mesh to a solid. I used the Generate Face Groups tool first with the Fast option and again with the Accurate option.  These are features in the Timeline. See the attached .f3d file.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dan,

Thank you so much!! I was able to convert the mesh to the solid following your lead. But, I tried the same to one of my other mesh but it is not working. Could you please help me with that too. I have attached the screenshot of the error and also the f3d file to work on below. Thank you!

Hi @pr1743

Working with Mesh files is an art, keep trying different options until you get the results you're looking for.

I looked at the Front STL and I did the following.

  1. Ran a Repair, there was an self intersecting face.
  2. Reduced the face count.
  3. Ran the Repair again to ensure the design was OK.
  4. Converted the mesh using the Organic option.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dan,

Yes, I have attempted to convert it directly using organic in the past, but all I received was a solid surface rather than a solid body. Can you make this into a solid body the same way you made the prior generic base? Because if anything has a solid body, extruding it would be simpler. Thank you so much really appreciate your help!

Thank you,

Priya

Hi @pr1743

To turn the STL file into a solid, I had to first reduce the face count and repair the mesh to ensure there were no issues.

Since the helmet is not prismatic in shape, I used the Organic method. In the above post, I added the .f3d that you can review the Timeline.

Here is the result with the Prismatic option and see the attached .f3d file. It's still a surface body.

Does this help.

Hi @pr1743

If you're not able to open the .f3d file, ensure your Fusion is up to date. A new version was released last night. Restart Fusion and the update process will be completed.
