Edge Milling an Angle

Trying to edge mill the angle on this part, but it's taking too much of a cut for the first pass. How can you get the software to back up and not take so much on the first cut?

Can you attach the file? What strategy are you using in the toolpath shown?

Thanks,

Got it! Just increased my number of roughing passes from 4 to 16.Screenshot 2023-06-09 145250.pngScreenshot 2023-06-09 145420.png

I'm glad you got it figured out. What machine are you doing this on and what material are you cutting?

That seems like a lot of small roughing passes for what you are trying to do. I would also guess that you are now cutting air for some of the beginning passes. You might consider doing a roughing pass to get rid of the bulk of the material and then using a finishing pass to clean out the last pass. Or There are techniques you can do to contain the toolpath so it only cuts stock.

I can't show you those things without the file however.

Here is the file. Running this on a 1995 Fadal VMC 6030,  it's an aluminum part. I'm a tool maker who's pretty new to the manufacturing aspect of the software and this CNC machine. So, I'm trying to take it slow but I'd appreciate any input on how to improve my techniques.

Hi @claibornewells Please find attached a version of your file with three setups.

The first setup is your original setup and toolpaths.

The second setup is a setup that contains a roughing toolpath that gets rid of the majority of the stock, and then a 2D contour to finish the edge.

The third setup is very similar to yours. I've made some adjustments to increase the efficiency of the toolpaths. If you compare the first 2D contour and the second 2D contour in that setup, you will see the second 2D contour only cuts where there is stock. If you want to achieve the same results for the first 2D contour in that setup, edit the toolpath and enable stock contours. That will force the tool to not cut outside of the stock no matter how many roughing toolpaths you ask Fusion to make.

I also changed a couple of other things in that setup. On the linking tab, I chose keep tool down and I also changed the maximum staydown distance to 8" and used a lift height of .01. The final change I did was to set the lead-in sweep angle to 0. They seem like minor changes but if you simulate the toolpaths you will see that motion has been reduced by quite a bit.

Are you an educucator or are you a Fusion user? This group is meant for users that are educators. Don't worry if you made a mistake. In the future, you can use one of these forums instead.

Appreciate you taking the time to review that for me, this will help me a great deal in optimizing my future toolpaths!

Thanks,
