Workflow Advice and duplicating components

Hiya!  I posted yesterday about aligning components and I received the advice that I needed to use joints rather than using the move command.  I just wanted to make sure on this next part - I'm assuming these joints are going to be primarily driven by the level of detail of my sketches yes?  For example, if I want to put a wall stud 24" center along a rail, the sketch of the rail must have some sketch geometry at 24" center so that I can precisely place the rigid joint for the stud.  Without that sketch geometry there is no way to place the joint at precisely 24" center....am I on the right track here?

Secondly, I am making a flat for a musical show and I have built one 8'x10' section.  I want to duplicate that section.  I selected all of the components and did copy, but found no paste option.  So I tried mirroring it but things went wonky and ultimately crashed the program.  I have included a screen cast of it.  Am I going about this the wrong way?

Thanks in advance!

1. Fully constrain and dimension your sketches

2. Familiarize yourself with Fusion 360 R.U.L.E #1

3. Model one 2x4 and pattern.
