What's the best way of cutting a complex pattern around a cylindrical shape?

Hey guys,

Maybe you can help me out. Spinning my head around how to solve this. circular pattern.jpg

First: I have issues creating those patterns neat, symmetrical and parallel to the outer surface. So that the cuts are also not stretched on the outter surface.

Second: I've also tried to repeat my cuts with the pattern function but it crashed. What's the most efficent way?

Thanks in advance!

Alex

Hiii @Anonymous

greeting for the day,

Thanks for using Autodesk forum for finding your solution.

Firstly, you darw a Sketch & use Extrude cut which you want to cut into other body.

Secondly, you draw a another sketch as the pattern according to this.

& Finally, You use Pattern on path (Pattern type feature).

Hi Anil,

Thanks! But this is actually what I just did. I'm looking for another option without the issues that I described.

I could be wrong but, based on this IdeaStation feature request, I don't think we have a tool for that yet, so consider up-voting it. But if there's a way to do it, I'm also interested, so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Yes, looks like that. Thanks. I hope maybe there is also another option to do it. Don't wanna wait for that. 🙂

Using construction planes you can get pretty close to what you want though (the workflow may vary depending on the nature of your surface). Here are some examples of how you could use construction planes:

For cylinders, you can use this much quicker approach (this is actually exactly what you want, but it only works for surfaces that can be flattened i.e. cylinder, cone (?), etc):

Thanks! That seems kind of what I'm looking for. 🙂
