I usually need to start my work flow with imported OBJ artwork.  In DIRECT MODE, I can easily create an OFFSET PLANE and then use the MOVE tool to move and rotate until it aligns to become the art's plane of symmetry.  In PARAMETRIC MODE, the plane can only be an OFFSET PLANE or PLANE AT AN ANGLE, but after that initial creation I cant figure out how to move it and adjust both position and angle to get it exactly where I want it like I do in DIRECT MODE.

The command you are looking for is called Create Base Feature.  You can use it to create Direct Modeled features, in your case a Construction Plane, and still preserve your Parametric Timeline.  The video will demo this process on a simple model.
