When you right click a step on the design timeline, one of the options is "convert to DM feature"  - what does that do?

I think you can actually select multiple features in timeline to try to convert to a Direct Modeling feature (which is where when editing history is not captured in the timeline).  I never have really used this much, so not sure what kind of circumstances would call for doing an after fact conversion like that.

That was bothering me too. Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYyPpkyo4rw&list=PLmA_xUT-8UlK7kNr7oESyhgFTL5KAPZ4z&index=9  at about 6min30sec

Good video on how to mix in direct modeling while preserving the history tree.

There are two ways to do this, for two different reasons.

Using the command Create Base Feature you can achieve a history free node in your timeline.

Otherwise, as you have discovered you can convert parametric timeline nodes to DM. In a deep workflow you may find that a previous parametric relationship is inconvenient. So Convert to DM would be used to break this relationship for the selected commands.
