Using image as background to model, how do I move it and rotate it?

Hey folks,

I noticed that I can inset and image as a "canvas" to trace and model form it.

however I am having some difficulties.

1- I would like to move the image and align a feature in the photo / image to the origin to start a sketch.

2- I would also like to rotate it form such point / feature.

I am thinking or creating a base sketch in autocad or rhino and then import that into fusion for modeling and CAM, but I am sure that is only because I am a newb at fusion.

help.

Thank you !

Hi crullier,

Thanks for reaching out. After inserting an image, there is a canvas node in the browser. You may notice that we can move or rotate the image via the "Edit Canvas" command available in the context menu. However, I didn't figure out a way to align a feature in the image to the origin. I think you may trace the profile first and then align the Fusion sketch curves later.

Best Regards,

No, don't. Just don't!

Learning how to do this properly with the tools in Fusion 360 may not be as fast as you may be right now using this  totally antiquated AutoCAD software but you'll be off much better when working with native tools in Fusion 360. There are endless threads on the forum about problems with importing vector formats such as DX for SVG.

You may get lucky and don't come across these, but if you do, the time you'd spend on getting the import to work properly is better spent on learning the native tools.

Good morning, well that is why I am posting and trying to get this working for me.

Is there a way to MOVE the node in the canvas edit more? I could not figure this out?  Is this were possible then, I can place the note onto the feature in the image and then move the canvas accordingly.

I tried moving the sketch, but if I need to go back to the canvas to make a revision I did not pick up then its a challenge.

Is there a reason you need to move the canvas? Can you create the model where the canvas imports then move the component when it's finished?

One way you might be able to position the canvas is create a sketch and draw a base point on the image and then a point you want to move to and add dimensions. End the sketch, right click the sketch in the browser and show the dimensions, edit the canvas and enter the sizes from the sketch.

I don't use canvases so hadn't tried this before but if you start by creating a component and with it active import your canvas, the canvas will move with the component. This means you can start building the model, add a joint to position the component and the canvas will move with the component and you can finish building in place.

Here's an idea for positioning a canvas by moving a component that contains the canvas. I position a joint origin at the base point I want in the canvas then use a joint with the document origin to position. After positioning you might want to use another component to build the part so that your sketch origins are at the document orign rather than at the component origin you moved.

And here's another screencast I made a while ago showing how to accurately scale and rotate a canvas.
