User Parameter Questions

I'm wondering why, when you import a component into a file, you're unable to edit its parameters, and when you break the link, the parameters get renamed automatically.

When your'e working on an assembly and you have many parts that share the same parameter, shouldn't you be able to modify them all at the same time rather than opening up every single file and changing each one?

Is there any way to work around this?

Thanks

Hi Kieran,

Fusion 360 doesn't currently support cross-document parameter sharing/editing.  This is on our radar, but hasn't been started yet.

Fusion does, however, support the creation of multiple components (parts) within a single design.  You can use the "New Component" command in the Assemble panel to add additional components, which can share parameters within the parent design.

Hope this helps,

Charles

Parameters for linked components can not be changed in the "assembly" file. You have to break the link in order to edit the parameters in the "assembly" file. This is just how Fusion 360 works at this point in time. I think what you mean by "the parameters get renamed automatically." is that if two parameters have the same name, one will get a "_1" on the end. This is so you can differentiate between the parameters and which part they are linked to. If you want each parameter that shares the same name to update at the same time then just have one equal the other. So if you have a parameter called "Length=20" and "Length_1=20", change it so it says "Length=20" and Length_1=Length". This way both the parameters will update when the "Length" parameter is changed. I hope this helps!

Hey Matt, hope you're well!

Yes, that's exactly what I mean, where is adds a "_1". I was hoping there would be an option to have them keep their name and merge all the parameters together, but I guess that would also give you problems in some cases.

Or a way of modifying parameters of the linked components - something like the way global variables work in Solidworks.

Charles, how far out would something like this be? a couple months? years?

Thanks for the help!

I've been busy but good. I hope you are doing well too!

No functionalities like that exist yet. What you could do is make each parameter that you want to link a favorite. This way they are easier to find when you want to "merge" them together.

I hope that helps a bit!
