Update a derived part

Hi,

I've made an assembly that uses an off-the-shelf enclosure which needs holes drilled in it. I derived this part into a new assembly with the other components and then added the holes. It now turns out that I need to update the base part, because there was an error in one of the dimensions. However, I can't seem to work out how to re-update the derived part from the base part in my assembly. Is this possible? If it isn't, then what is the purpose of the derive part function compared to just copy+paste of the components in a different design (or linked component, and then break link)?

In theory, once you edit and save the source design, the destination design should show you a little "update derived parts" button in the upper left of the screen:

However, there's currently a bug that often prevents this indicator from appearing.

Look in the timeline of the destination document - the updated derivation sources should be similarly highlighted and you can right-click on the derive feature to update.

Thanks! Yep, the update button was missing, but I was able to get it done with the timeline.

Hi. I am experiencing “a bug that often prevents this indicator from appearing.” It’s 7 Sept 2021 are there any updates on this bug? Best, Troy

@troyostrander I am not able to reproduce the issue in the latest release. Can you share your file and steps, perhaps a video describing the issue? I would suggest creating a separate post. This will ensure it gets listed in the unanswered/unsolved posts.

I am suffering from DERIVED PARTS not behaving as intended and simply not updating in documents that derive them.

I simply get "Failed to get link to Source document." With no ability to resolve. Everything downstream in 20+ documents needs to be remodelled is my current "work around" and whats worse - I have already done this once - so this will be my second time redoing the model.

I would love an update on when the derive feature will DERIVE. This is now 2025.

I'm having a similar issue as nunya_business.  Using derive on a modelled logo element to add to different component designs.  But after i've placed the object, when i make changes in the original it just says "failed to get link to source document"
