[Under Development] Customizable Keyboard Shortcuts!!

We know you’ve been waiting for this folks! It’s one of the top 10 Idea Station requests. Comments, emails, tweets, letters written in blood… we get your requests from everywhere!

And I’m happy to share the news that we are working on it!

As an Experience Designer for Fusion, I would like to offer a sneak peek into the UI that our teams are working on:

Artboard Copy 3.png

As you can see above, a new section will be added to Fusion Preferences that will allow viewing and modifying all keyboard-accessible commands. We are working hard to make the navigation as simple as possible, so you can use it as a reference tool as well, that simply lists all available default shortcuts.

To modify or assign a shortcut, just click on it in the SHORTCUT KEY column and type the new one.

"Wait, what if I accidentally assign a key that already does something else? Will you crash my Fusion?” *frown*

Well no, we’ve got you covered. Fusion will immediately prompt you that there is a conflict, and you will have a choice to keep the either of the commands on that key:

Quickly wanna find a command? It will have a search box that will look through the ocean of all commands in Fusion and present matches:

Few notes:

  • Customizations will be synced with your Autodesk account, so you will get the same environment if you borrow your neighbor’s computer (don’t).
  • There will a button that brings back factory defaults. (AKA We told you so).

In future we are also planning two nifty little additions:

  • Print Reference Sheet – Will export a well-formatted printable file that contains a list of all commands that have a shortcut key assigned, custom or otherwise. You can use this file as a cheat sheet to improve your productivity. You can also print it and pin it next to your desk (save paper though).
  • Import/Export – Want your entire team to have same Fusion environment? Want to boast your ultra-productive shortcut set to your designer friends? This function will give you a file that you can send to other Fusion users and they can Import it on their account to get your customizations. Cool, eh?

That’s all I have for you now. Please let us know what do you think of this, and share any feedback and comments or features/points we might have missed.

Cheers!

Thank you everyone for the support and enthusiasm. We are equally excited to see this feature on the floor asap. We’re working on making it even simpler and easier than the experience I shared earlier. Thanks for the valuable suggestions, we will keep them in mind as we move forward developing this. Stay tuned for updates! 🙂

@laughingcreek Well you can use ⌘, (command+comma) on a Mac to open Preferences dialog, as it is a system standard. For Windows, there is no keyboard shortcut available right now but this has been noted. 🙂

As far as viewport navigation goes, will there be any limitations on which keys can be used as modifiers to either mouse button?
Ex: Some programs don't allow you to use "1,2, and 3" and you're forced to stick with "Ctrl/Cmd, Alt/Option, and Shift, etc. for navigation. It sucks going back and forth between PC and Mac mostly because Fusion doesn't store selection procedures in the undo history. When you lose a big tedious selection due to a viewport misclick brain fart...and the massive amount of edges you just individually selected poofs away...

Please allow Space bar option for panning (a la almost all graphic design/vector drawing applications). I'm using an Apple Magic Mouse (no scroll wheel button) and panning is a PITA. I keep holding the Space key due to years of doing so in Photoshop/Illustrator/etc. to no avail. 😞

And definitely we need some options to configure mouse buttons.

Or assign keys to replicate mouse button functionality, a la hold Space key for panning like most graphic design applications.

Look forward for implementation of this awesome feature!

Will it be possible to set hotkeys for Look At and the Views? And for the Sculpt workspace? Especially for T-Spline tools while you're working with a Form.

And, sorry for this question - any news regarding the date of the release?

Any update on when this will be rolled out to users? It's been more than half a year since this post. I understand that software development is a long process and all bugs must be ironed out, but still, it's quite a long time.

Yes we understand it’s been a while, Fusion has been going through a lot of functional and usability development that you will be seeing pretty soon. We appreciate everyone’s patience and thank you all for the comments and suggestions.

Meanwhile, I’m happy to share that Fusion 360 development teams are almost done with Customizable Keyboard Shortcuts and we will start rolling it out in coming months. We have worked hard on it and will be happy to know how users like it.

Stay tuned!
