Trying to wrap text around half a sphere

Trying to wrap text around half a sphere. The standard extruded cut picking the object to extrude from doesn't seem to be working, or im not doing it correctly. Its basically just extruding straight up through the part vs wrapping around the sphere. So the text is distorted. Looked into doing it in the sheet metal platform but wasn't sure if that would work either. Any thoughts

Hi Brad, you can use the sheet metal operations. First extrude join the letters on the unfolded sheet that you made from a Flange, be sure to make the profile from an open arc as close to 360 as possible, than fold back.

Daniel Lyall I tried moving the text plane to be above the sphere and extrude down, kind of how you show there. It shows the text on the arc of the part but still seems to cut vertically only. Winds up with the same issue. Trying the method in the YouTube clip now. We'll see if I can get it created.

I tried the tutorial but after spending the time to do it it still didn't seem to work since I was doing a cut vs emboss.

I ended up making individual planes from the same center point for each letter and adjusted the angle for each one. This seemed to work for what I needed.

Yep for any sort of complex surface just go straight to manually positioning text 🙂

Hi Brad, Here is a way around your problem as you can see in pic1 there is no problem projecting and embossing onto a flat curvy surface. But what you have is a curve around the text as well and that's why it looks to the flat surface of the base shown in your pic. So what you need to do is create a flat surface inside the shape for the text as in pic2 then project onto that. But you still have the problem that the text is flat to the strip inside. You can get around that by using a 360 revovle to shave away the surface as seen in pic 3. in pic 4 you can see that this then follows the contour around the shape as needed. Hope that helps!

Peter Pavey Thank you. Would this work with a subtract/cut vs emboss. That was part of my issue on the tutorial on YouTube that they were doing an emboss vs a cut. Basically what I was making was a stencil to write on a golf ball. So I would need a cut in order to get a sharpie through the letters. My work around worked but I'm sure was a better way, similar to what you have shown.

Is this what you mean? this is a band that is above the ball as well as inside the ball. The project and cut using the emboss option. Then a body split is applied to the band using the ball to split with. Then hiding the bit that is going into the ball this means that the inner shape of the band follows the contour of the ball. If you want the whole ball to be covered you just need to extend the band out to cover the ball completly before applying the split. If you have a problem get back to me and I will knock one up for you.
