Trying to create a case using a STEP model of phone

Hi,

I'm very new to CAD and Fusion 360. I'm trying to create a phone case; a very thin one that I will line on the inside and put leather on the outside). I'm following a YouTube tutorial (though it's for a completely different model) and I keep getting stuck on the bit after the sweep. I can only sweep so much as the model I'm using seems to have it's edges all split up (I'm not sure I'm explaining this correctly)... I attach the F3Z file here for reference.

Alternatively is there a better way for me to do this?

Thank you a lot in advance!

It is best to project edges into a sketch in this case. There are several ways to do that:

Oh my god that’s amazing @TrippyLighting !! I you’ve honestly just made my day.

I was also just wondering what you think is the best way to create the buttons and cutouts of the phone in the case are? Should I do this manually or is there a way to do this using the model?

Here is one way to do this. Again, this is only one way to do it. I prefer to work with surfaces and existing 3D geometry where I can and not rely on sketches when I don't have to.

Thank you so much Trippy! You've helped me get a very very foundational knowledge of this and I've been able to create other elements by myself because of you. Thanks again!

The issue you're facing with the sweep might be due to the way the edges are segmented in your STEP model. One way to solve this is to clean up the edges before sweeping by either merging them or using the "Join" or "Stitch" tools in Fusion 360. This can create a smoother path for the sweep, making it easier to get the shape you want. If that doesn't work, you might try using the "Loft" tool instead of the sweep, as it can sometimes handle complex edges better.

On a side note, while working on my own case project, I found a site with some really cool pre-made cases. I ended up buying one because it was just easier and faster for my needs, plus the designs were pretty sleek and durable. If you're ever looking to save some time or just want to check out different styles, I recommend taking a look at https://inarascases.com/. It could give you some inspiration or a backup option if CAD gets too tricky!
