Trouble with applying a pattern to a sphere

ok so, first off, if I do anything wrong let me know, as this is my first time trying this out

so I have a grid like pattern of holes on a cylinder surface, but am having huge difficulty applying it to a sphere in a way that the dont spread out towards the middle, and group together towards the top

I had managed to get a bit of the surface of the semi circle covered in the holes in the pattern I wanted, but when I tried to do more to cover that gap, I couldnt get the proper spacing down

Essentially, is there a way for me to fill the blank surface of the sphere with the holes that cover the rest of it?

Thanks!

P.S. in case it matters, I do plan to 3d print this, as its a microphone mesh cover thingy for a prop for a play

Use this technique for making a golf ball except sketch the shape that you want and cut instead of a sphere cut. Then pattern the features like they did for the golf ball.
