Trouble creating a 3D object from imported OBJ file

Hi all,

I recently used Pix4D to generate a topographical mesh using images taken with a drone.  I imported the mesh into Meshmixer and extruded the mesh.  I wanted to import the OBJ file into Fusion 360 and add a base to make a nice 3D print. The extrusion seemed to go well and I was able to export it as an OBJ file however when inserted into Fusion 360 I am stuck with two bodies that I cannot combine or do anything with.  I certainly cannot add a base.  The 2 bodies are labelled mmgroup (meshmixer?). I have tried use stitch feature etc in Meshmixer but they seem to be treated as 1 object in meshmixer.  Have not had any success chasing an answer on the web so any help appreciated.

Now I know this could be an issue that is better resolved on Meshmixer forum but I applied to join the forum 2-3 weeks ago and my registration is still "waiting to be approved" so have basically given up as I cannot wait indefinitely for an answer. (I thought forum approval was almost instant?)  Thanks

First, I wouldn't suggest trying to do anything with this mesh in fusion.  Fusion sucks at editing mesh files in general.  The one shown in the pic looks very dense, which is also problematic for fusion.

One workflow I have employed to do what your describing is this:

1-bring the mesh into fusion.

2-create the solid you want to add to (or subtract from) the mesh.  (but don't actually do anything to the mesh, just use it as a visual referance).

3-export the whole kit and caboodle back out to mesh mixer. 4-do the Boolean operations in mesh mixer.

If you have multiple bodies in mesh mixer that seem to be fused into a single object, it might be that you have multiple "shells."  in mesh mixer you would use the "separate shells" command to separate these.

Hi Laughingcreek,

Thanks for the reply. I am quite new to meshmixer so pardon my ignorance.  Aside from extruding, can you please elaborate on how you can create a solid from the initial topographical mesh without touching the mesh?

Thanks

Sorry, I meant Fusion 360, not meshmixer.  Actually new to both but have always created in Fusion 360, never used an imported mesh.

Also, are you talking about importing the extruded mesh in 360 or opening the the original mesh as created by Pix4D? Ta
