Trouble copying component into same subassembly

Hello,

I am new to Fusion and creating more complex drawings. I have worked in AutoCAD a bit, but I have not had this issue come up.

I am following this Youtube Video on Fusion : Autodesk Fusion 360 - Part 1/4 - Model and Assemble a Shed - Intermediate/Advanced (2023) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8-NYBlOORY&t=956s)

I followed along well until time 14:20 when he copies a component then pastes it into the same subassembly. I can copy the component, but when I right-click the subassembly I don't have the option to paste. I do have the option to paste it into the top level assembly, though.

I believe it has something to do with me having to select "Edit in Place" vice just selecting components and subassemblys.

Hi! I believe you need to edit the target subassembly in place and then paste it. Is it what you are trying to do?

Many thanks!

@crr2443

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

Bear with me, I am new to the forum. I will attempt to attach it. I did not see a .f3d, but I am able to Export to .f3z

Hi! Are you trying to copy one instance of the subassembly and paste it to another instance of the same assembly? If yes, that will not be allowed, since it will become cyclic relationship. Please show me the exact step leading to the behavior.

Many thanks!

Your file is not following that linked tutorial, as the tutorial does not have these linked component assemblies.

Edit in place will not be a workflow in the tutorial either.

@Johsonshiue

I am attempting to copy the component Rim Board in the Subassembly Floor, so I'll have Rim_Board_1 and Rim_Board_2

in the subassembly Floor. I am unsure what you mean about instance so same assembly.

@davebYYPCU I agree, I noticed that my file has linked items and edit in place. Where the tutorial does not. I do not know how to make my program not link them like that. If I just follow straight from the video, it formats it like this. Is there a setting that needs to be changed to make it to where it doesn't do that?

One goes with the other, linked files, can not be changed, without Edit in Place in your current file.

Right click, on the browser items, you get the Break Link option.  If you do that you have consequences to consider.

I did not examine the video, to see if the files are imported in the tutorial.  There is a possibility but didn’t check for it at the time.

The patterning of Floor joist was done in the tutorial main file.

You are a victim of new upgrades?  In 2023, we did not have this new interface and wonderful Design with Intent interference.  I think you were lost in making / saving Part (default) Files.  Autodesk has utterly destroyed the tutorial workflow recently (January 2026)

build in place files, (Hybrid these days) do not have linked components.  Copt / Paste Components is a build in place workflow.

@obulesub  It appears the video is from a different version. In the video the new components the author is creating does not automatically make them linked.

With the updates we have, we have to use edit in place to copy and paste components in subassemblies.

@johnsonshiue @davebYYPCU

Thank you for the assistance in this issue I was having.

Nope,

you should use Hybrid files, the video will then be the same as Fusion Hybrid file. You will not be confused by that video if you do this.

Autodesk is not promoting Hybrid, and has it hidden from default (Part) files.
