Timeline issue

Hi,

When I want to edit sketch or edit feature in the timeline they are often grayed out. But if I unactivate by clicking antwere in the drawing and rightclicking once more in the timeline they come to live. This is very frustrating. Why is this?

Best regards

Hans

Unfortunately Fusion's been like this for a long time. Support suggested you should select the feature with a left click then right click to get the menu but I find this no more reliable. Don't know why no one from Autodesk gets this problem, perhaps they're all using nice new shiny fast computers or something.

Thank for your answer,

So the problem is in the hardware you think? So this is not going to be fixed in a future update? Better invest in a new computer then.

Best regards

Sorry I was just joking. It just seems odd they're not see the problem, as it happens so often when I'm using Fusion.

A video would really help here. Can you record this with Screencast?

The trouble is it is intermittent, just like bugs IRL they seem to know when you're stressed out and in a hurry. After reading this post today I experimented a bit and only had the problem a few times, sometimes when I'm in a rush to get something finished it'll happen several time in a row, only notice it editing sketches.

Here's a screengrab.

Ok managed to get a screencast. The first sketch I select with a right click which is not recommended in the past by @jeff_strater but the second sketch I left click then right click and the menu still has greyed out options!

This is easy to reproduce.

When you select a feature, and in the case of your video you selected the thread feature first.

The workaround is to click into the canvas to completely clear the memory stack for the mouse prior to right click on the sketch.

I'll log this right now. Thanks for pointing it out.

Hi

I have to go with Mark here, I tryed to find a pattern in the behavior to be able to record it but it seames to be random.

It's not random, it's very easy to reproduce. It happens because you just selected a feature in the timeline. (there may be other reasons, but that's the easiest way to see it)

It is a bug and we are aware of it and able to reproduce it, which means we can fix it.

To make the problem happen:

1. Pick a feature like extrude in the timeline

2. Immediately right click on a sketch node

To avoid the problem:

If you see a gray menu item, left click into the canvas to free up the mouse.

Right click on the sketch icon.

@Phil.E I made a screencast today for something else and noticed the same problem when right clicking a sketch profile and trying to select edit sketch from the right click menu. The a sketch in the timeline is highlighted again but thought I'd let you know as it's a different situation and menu.

Mark

Edit. Looking closer, selecting the profile is highlighting the sketch in the timeline and I just tried to repeat the problem and it works Ok!

Thanks I added it as a second case to test when we fix this. I do think it's exactly the same problem, so fixing one most likely fixes the other. But we will have to be sure, so this is a good thing to check on.

Hi @Phil.E,

your workaround does not work for me. Here is a screencast which shows:

  1. I open a design
  2. The first thing I try is to right click a sketch with a warning in the timeline - no menu appears
  3. I try your workaround which is to click the canvas
  4. Try to right click the sketch again - no menu appears
  5. I go move the marker left a couple of steps
  6. Right click the sketch again - now the menu appears

In my experience moving the marker left does not always work either.

This is a very bug frustrating - sometimes I spend a long time trying to edit a feature in the timeline.

This isn't the same problem. The OP shows that when a feature is selected it affects what is shown on the right click menu for other features. In your case, Fusion is just ignoring your mouse clicks. You are not getting a menu at all. So it's a different problem entirely.

Do you use a space mouse or CADmouse from 3Dconnexion?

Thanks,

I see.

Yes, I do use a 3Dconnexion mouse. I just unplugged it and tried again, but I still have the same issues invoking the menu.

This is a focus issue that is well known and is being worked on by both 3Dconnexion and by the Fusion team. It's not that easy to fix.

The problem comes from modern applications such as Fusion that use multiple app windows. 3Dconnexion is trying to keep track of what app window you are working in. When you open from the data panel you are using the app "Inventor Home" and the CADmouse becomes focused on it. When you go back to Fusion, you have to click a few times to get the mouse to recognize the Fusion app window.

Here are some helpful tips:

Get the latest 3Dconnexion drivers. http://www.3dconnexion.com/service/drivers.html

When you close the data panel, close it by using the grid icon, see below. This puts focus back onto Fusion.

Please let us know if this helps.

Hi @Phil.E,

unfortunately, now that I have tried it some more, even with the workaround I can not always make the menu appear 😞
