Tapered thread

Hi, is there a way I can create a tapered thread model. I tried using the thread command on a tapered face from the circle I extruded, but I could even select the face. I tried moving it back in the timeline but it didn't show the threaded surface

Hi,

What is the purpose of a Tapered Thread? A standard thread or screw have clamping properties

that allow them to securely hold in place. A tapered thread would reduce those holding forces

and possibly not hold at all. Any thread will certainly prevent movement in the "upwards"

direction but a tapered thread probably would still allow rotation and not lock as securely and

maybe not lock at all.

Cheers

Tapered threads are used in numerous applications, but most commonly for sealing Fluid fittings using either BSPT or NPT standards.

Hi,

Thanks for that. I have not come across them before. If you have a tapered thread

then wouldn't that affect how the threads lock down? As the thread gets "thicker"

it would get to a point where the thickness would prevent the thread from engaging

any further, sort of like a wedge? A normal thread locks due to friction between the

threads pulling them into each other. Wouldn't a wedge be a much weaker lock?

Is there any specific advantage to use tapered threads for fluids or is it some

traditional thing? I do know that threads can sometimes leak with fluids.

Cheers

Is there any specific advantage to use tapered threads for fluids,

Yes.  they are very common in fluid handling regimes - which rarely requires any clamping effect

They are designed to work efficiently in the tightening direction. to avoid

Might help....

A tapered coil can give you a close approximation of a thread. Create the coil. Revolve/Join a solid cone to create the proper valley width.  Revolve/Cut another cone to create the proper crest width.

A sweep may give you a better thread form.  Pipe should work but doesn't.
