Taper on Body using sketch reference

I have a 1/2" thick digit that needs a taper. Problem is I can't use the "Extrude taper" because my clients spec calls for a distance on the taper (see attached "taper angle" screenshot). Im totally stuck and could use a hand.

 

You can see on the digits Ive done a 1/8" offset sketch line that shows where the taper needs to end up. In other words, I need to taper from the outer face of the digit to offset sketch line. Any ideas?

Hi @1CMill,

 

I made an example of a way that you maybe can use for your challenge.

 

  • make a workplane above the top surface (Your height dimension on the drawing)
  • Create a sketch on it and make an offset of the outer contour (Your width dimension on the drawing)
  • Make a loft between it and you have your tapered faces.

Of course you can use the extrude with taper function. You just have to us a little math.

 

The angle you are looking for is  the inverse sinus of the short side  divided by the long side:  asin(.125/.5) = 14.775 degrees.

You are totally right by doing some Math, but for someone with a little Math knowledge it is a easy work around and easy to check your input. 😉👍

The first technical drawings I created as an engineer were on transparency with pencil and then ink. This was basic knowledge and I bet every entry level carpenter nowadays will need to know this.

Thank you for your help. I was able to get through this project with your help. The extrude function worked great once I had that angle.
