Taper a solid after creation

Hi guys,

Do you think fusion 360 can (design mode, non sculpt) has some functions to do what he does from minute 1,22 to 1,26?

So he can taper the object like with a cage to give a kind of "taper" to the ring.

 

What do you think?

no, unfortunately, Fusion today does not have this kind of global deformation tool.  It is on our roadmap, but, to be honest, likely to be a while before we get to it.

Hi @jeff_strater ,

 

You don't have too. There are many ways to achieve this end result in F360.

F360 is much more simple and sophisticated than the one in the video. In fact, the shape of the ring is very simple to make parametrically in F360. 

If I'll do it for you, I won't do you any favors. You must learn the basics first!

Hi  Beyondforce,

 

even if I'm a very newby in f360, I've already done the basic shape in 30 seconds... it's very simple. Exactly the same 2d sketch as in the video and a sweep command will do the trick!

My question, however, wanted to be a request to understand if there is a function same as the software in the video... Jeff replies "not yet"... so I think it's not possible following that workflow.

good point, @Beyondforce - I only answered the specific question: "can you do the operation in this video?".  You answered the much more general question - "can this shape be made?".  Yours was a much better answer 🙂

A thing like that but tapered in just one direction.

The taper angle or the draft angle of your example is applied to the two directions.

 

I did, for example, the two elliptical sections, one above each other and a profile to use for a revolution along the path... but this mean that I've to think to the final shape early before starting my modelling.

In Fusion you can make that with a Top, side and front view Loft.

Using a helper surface edge from sketch 2, and not the actual sketch curves, makes for a tangent mirror operation.

Allows the Tangency option to be triggered,

Step up the timeline, edit features to see how it is done,

Adjusting the dimensions to suit.

@Anonymous looking at your other thread where you are trying to model a shape that is more complex than might be apparent at first sight I think you will enjoy surface based workflows based on splines and surfacing as demonstrated well by @davebYYPCU. Often these are more work but offer much better control and allow you to  create objects that cannot be achieved with solid modeling alone.

 

In general I have to respectfully disagree with the implication apparent in others responses, which is "you don't need this, because this can be done in Fusion 360 in a different way". Just because this simple object can be created another way, does not render a deformer function un-needed. Add some geometry to that object and then perform such an operation. The time it requires to re-create such geometry manually increases exponentially.

 

I'd be happy to post examples 😉

Infact, the first rough shape of the ring was created using solids, but then I extracted the edge and used the surfaces to achieve the results... I did't see other way. As I can see, Fusion 360 has more similar commands than Rhino (I was a beta tester of Rhino 1,0 some decades ago😂). Also the workflow is similar but F360 seems easier to me.

By the way, as you wrote, it would be good to have some deformers more... something like in the sculpt environment.

This evening I'll study the  @davebYYPCU's solution.
