Sweeping Profile Around Projected Guide Curve

Hi Guys,

New to the forum, I've been using Fusion for a few weeks now trying to learn the ropes. Mainly use AutoCAD but wanted to make the move towards parametric modelling. I'm a furniture designer by the way.

So I have a problem trying to sweep this profile around a guide curve, as the thread title suggests. What I'm wanting to do seems very simple, but I can't get it to work. I'm hoping somebody can tell me where I'm going wrong with this!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Wesley

Can you be more specific about which profile and which curve?  Perhaps a screenshot with a few red arrows and text would clarify the request.

Sweep Profile and path.JPG

Hi,

Sorry to not be clear I have attached an image with the profile highlighted in red and the profile path in blue.

Thanks,

Wesley

The error message here is accurate.  Sweep does not allow you to create self-intersections.  In this case, your profile is larger than the radius of the arcs in your path, so the sweep would hit against itself as it goes around these corners

These are the corners where the self-intersection would occur:

The modeler can handle some simple cases, but apparently the 3 arcs in this corner is not one of those cases, unfortunately.

Thanks for coming back to me Jeff. To create this geometry what would you suggest? The dialog box is suggesting creating the shape in multiple operations, Does this mean multiple sweeps with different profiles? The most frustrating thing is that I have successfully done this sweep a few weeks ago, but unfortunately turned off design history, and am unable to figure out how I achieved it.

The image below is the same profile and nearly the exact same guide curve, which is what's confusing.

Thanks,

Wesley

Hi Wesley,

any particular reason to use the corners in your sketch? Just delete them and use fillets.

Sweep will work flawlessly.

Hi Puniatowicz , I prefer the shape of the guide curve corner to a straight single radius. The corners are comprised of a series of arcs as I'm sure you noticed. Out of curiosity did you fillet the extruded body and then use the sweep profile on the edge? Your solution may be an option!

Thanks very much,

Yes, that's exactly what I did. I was also able to almost match fillet value to your arc but if you need surgical precision it might not be the best solution.

Maybe make bigger fillets, sweep and then subtract the body with your profile sketch? just an idea, not sure if it will give a good results.

I'll give this a try, thanks so much for the help!
