Strange Deletion Issues on Imported File

I am not sure where to start with this one. There is a work-around, but it is going to take a lot of time.
I imported an IGES file for a VFD so that I do not have to create it from scratch. The imported file was fairly large (2000+ faces), and I did not want it slowing down the rest of the model (it will be part of an assembly). In that vein, I took the outer shell of the part and stitched it together and made it a component. The next step was to turn off visibility on the new component and delete everything else (as I just wanted the outside envelope). This proves, however, to be quite the job. I cannot select multiple entities at once without Fusion telling me that those entities are referenced elsewhere and doing some strange things (see the Screencast).
In short, if I use the click-and-drag selection, even if I use it on only one entity, I get a warning and then an error--it deletes almost every other body and gives errors with the stitched-together components. If I select one body at a time and delete it, I get no such error.
Perhaps there is a better way to do this--please let me know if so! I really just want the outside shape and dimensions of the imported part as a solid component that will not slow the rest of the design significantly.
