Strange Decal scaling

Hi...

I'm working on a project where I need to insert some text decals.

The decals are created in a vector program and saved out as .png's. There's no problem inserting the decals, but of some strange reason Fusion scales the decal's when inserted. So basically I end with every text line being of a different height (font size)??

Has anyone else experienced this?

Best regards from Denmark.

Hi @Anonymous

Could you show some screen shots of the text before and after so that I can see what is happening?

Thanks

You might have to uncheck 'Chain Faces' in the Decal Dialogue box. With 'Chain faces' checked, the image wraps around the body... this can cause distortion.

Sorry, I was away from Fusion a couple of days..

Ok, what I have done is sketch and extrude two circles. One is 50mm and the other one is 100mm, on each of the circles I have inserted the same decal. But as you see in the picture, Fusion scales decal in relation to the size of the geometry.. This means if you want to use text as decals, the chances of having the same font size across different geometry is nearly impossible, since Fusion will do it's own random scaling every time..

Or am I missing something?

Hi @Anonymous,

You are correct.  The default scale of the deal is based on the size of the face it is applied to.  Not on the scale of the image.

You can scale the image after the fact, but to your point, you can't control the scale between the two to make them consistent.

Hi all,

I have the same problem and I really need to be able to control the scale because we want to try different size of engraving on a specific part in order to take a decision of which one we will choose.

So how are we supposed to do ?

Because we could do it by adjusting the XY plane scale but as we are not even able to measure the decal dimensions we have actually no idea of what size is plotted and we can't even use that trick.

Thanks

Hi Diane

I can follow what you are trying to do, i actually used to work with laser engraving myself in another life before fusion 360 😉

Even if you could control the scaling better, using decals would still only be an approximate representation, since it would be very hard to link the actual size of the decal to the actual size of your model in fusion 360.

So in order to give you a precise representation of the engraving on the model, I would go in and actually model the engraving.

What kind type engraving will you be using? i guess you would need some kind of geometry to make the engraving when you get so far - unless you will be using a CO2 laser that could be driven by a bitmap or similar graphical format...

Hope this helps..

So many posts about this. Please all vote for on feature request. We use this decals all the time and it's painful right now. The more support we can get for the feature request to make Decal feature usable the sooner we can get this sorted.

Thanks
