Spiral detail on flared cylinder?

Hi there all!
I've been working on drawing up a few things to practise my skills, and while I've managed to figure out workarounds for most things, I can't find a way to get a spiral pattern on a handle I'm designing.
I've attached a screenshot of the shape I'm using, with a canvas behind it to show the detail. I'd like to have the black lines cut into the shape as a spiral, maybe only 2mm deep (included an image of another handle I made with what I'm after). I've tried using the thread tool, which won't work on non-cylinders. I could probably use several coils, and change the angle for each one in order to follow the contour of the handle. Wondering if there's a more efficient method than that?

Here is a spiral grooved sphere I made. If you look at the steps in the history you'll see the process I used. Ley me know if you have any questions about it.

Accepted solution

I took a guess where it begins and ends.  Also not sure how you want to end it off either.  You can change the pitch of the spiral 1 and the 2mm radius cut depth as needed.  The length is governed by the length of Sketch 32.   Model is attached.

Took a look through the history, didn't know you could use the surface tools in such a way. I clearly have some tutorials to watch!

Took a look at this just now. I vaguely understand the premise, but think it would give the wrong pattern for what I'm after and not sure how I'd modify this method. I've been sent an alternate way which seems to do the trick.

Aah sorry, I think you may have gotten confused.
I was replying to another user above, who offered their method for a pattern on a sphere. And I was referencing your method for my handle, and have marked it as the accepted solution
