Specify bed plane for 3D printed parts

Sending parts directly to 3D print utility is great but I inevitably have to re orientate parts in slicer program to position them as I want  on print bed.  Is there a way to specify how they are to be orientated upon export within F360?  Note that I don't necessarily want all the parts (components) in my model to be orientated the same way, so changing orientation of z axis is not helpful.  Likewise, orientating parts within 360 for the sake of the slicer program seems tedious.  My next stop is ideastation but wanted to see if anyone has a good workflow for this first. Thx

So easy to do in my Slicer, that I do it there, and don’t have to consider the Fusion side of it.

Always create your parts with Z up, then the slicer will automatically place them correctly.  If you have parts that need to be oriented differently in the model, create them in a separate file with the slicer Z up.  Use a joint to position them in the assembly model.  When I have a model positioned at an odd angle, I just measure the angle in Fusion 360 and apply it in the slicer.

My name is Andrew Sartorelli and I'm the Product Owner for Netfabb and the Additive Manufacturing technology inside Fusion 360. My team has actually been working for some time on adding AM functionality directly to Fusion 360 through the Manfaucture Workspace with the new Additive process type. Part of that functionality is the ability to independently orient and position components with respect to a build platform. Currently, we are supporting one specific process type, metal powder bed fusion or selective laser melting. But we have some exciting plans for other  technology types like fused filament fabrication (FFF). I can't get into too many details, but be sure to keep a close watch on the What's New announcements in the coming months!

I love to hear that you're working on this.  All I really need is the ability to specify the "print bed plane" for the object I'm selecting in the "3D Print" dialog box.  If none is selected you can use the default orientation, but, the ability to specify it would be the perfect solution to my issue.

 

I'm working on a dozen different designs all comprising of different bodies and/or components.  Everything will be glued in place, but many of the bodies/components need to be printed in a different orientations.

The ability to select multiple objects to 3D print has already been removed.  You can only select one object to 3D Print.  I was hoping this was changed in order to implement the ability to select the print bed plane.  I would very much prefer to upload my objects to online repositories in the orientation they should be printed at.

The slicer I use, SuperSlicer, allows you to select the face to be placed on the bed plane.  It takes two mouse clicks.

1. That´s not true.

2. alignment is done in the slicer

1.  You're going to have to prove it to me.  Fusion 360 only lets me select one object to 3D print.

2.  Yes, slicers can orientate objects.  But, so can Fusion 360.  Right?  I'm asking for additional functionality to assist with this process.  Are you saying no one would use the functionality I'm asking for?

 

There is too much opposition on this forum for recommended functionality and improvements.

Save as Mesh and 3D Print both depend on the organization in the Browser for the selection.  Selecting a component will add all visible subcomponents to the mesh. 

 

I don't have any trouble printing multiple stls as one print as long as they have the same origin. 

 

There  is no opposition to recommended functionality and improvements in the forum.  One user's demands are not going to make Autodesk rush to make changes.  You need to demonstrate that your ideas are not easily met by existing functionality and thousands of users would benefit.

Hi,
1. right click on a component and select "Save as Mesh" to have all the bodies located here in one 3MF or STL file and position them in the slicer as desired.
2. I'm just saying how I handle it and numerous "3D printers" as well.

It appears it forces all of the bodies and components to save to a mesh.  I can't just select 3 out of 10 of by bodies to print?

See post #9😁  Turn visibility of subcomponents and/or bodies off to deselect them when creating a mesh.
