Snapping to the midpoint of existing geometry.

I keep running into this, where I want to create a construction plane or axis line that intersects the midpoint an existing piece of geometry like a simple box. Is there a way to invoke snaps to place a construction plane? When you mouse over the edges you get the snap to the edge but mousing over midpoint I don't get a midpoint snap. Why? What I'm I missing.
In contrast.
If you want to draw a primitive on top of another primitive the midpoint snap comes alive but why not when drawing construction plane?
