Slicer / DXF / Nesting

Slicer is doing a terrible job at nesting, it's very wasteful and expensive.

It appears the nesting options in Slicer where removed at some point.   So I am trying to export to other software to do nesting.    For other dxf files I am able to use "deepnest" however when I use the dxf from slicer deepnest sees 1 part (the entire sheet) rather than the parts within the sheet.

How can I change the nesting of the parts in slicer ?

For anyone else in the future searching for this like I just was... (maybe my future self)

The think that confuses deepnest is that Slicer outputs a big rectangle around everything. What works for me:

  1. Export in Slicer to one giant sheet EPS
  2. Open the EPS in Inkscape
  3. Select the main object and "Ungroup"
  4. Select the outline around everything and delete it
  5. Find any shapes that are the wrong color (eg red that should be blue) and double click them to edit them. Select the red outline and delete it (there is a blue outline underneath the red)
    1. do _not_ ungroup the individual shapes
  6. Export as SVG
  7. Open in Deepnest.io - now all the parts are separate and Deepnest works
  8. Enjoy saving stock and faster laser/drag-knife cut times 🙂

Bonus: rotate things slightly in Inkscape so shapes are better aligned - this way the angles deepnest tries are more likely to work well.
