Sketching on multple planes?

After watching the video on lofting tips and tricks by Michael Aubry, I have been unable to duplicate what he shows.  I create a sketch on a plane of a long verticle line and a series of short horizontal lines connected to it.  Then I am able to create a plane at an angle (90 deg.) on each of the horizontal lines.  However I have yet to figure out why it will not let me sketch on those planes like he was able to do.  I can pick one to sketch a circle, etc. on: yet, when I try another sketch object it will not let me pick a different plane - only sketch on the previously picked one.  Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong or what is going on?

You have to finish the sketch you are on before creating the next sketch on the next plane.

Each of those planes will have a different sketch on it.

Makes sense but it is still not working for me . I have tried enter and
escape. I can pick a different object to skectch like do an elipse finish
out then do a circle and it sketches them both on the same plane.

Take a look here.

See how I use the STOP SKETCH button on the far right of the tool bar and then create a new sketch on the next plane?

Thank you.  Somehow I have not had to use the stop sketch command before.
