sketching and the symmetry control

Hi

I've never figured out how to make use of the Symmetry option on the sketching controls.   For that matter, I don't understand how to use the other options either, but I'll start with symmetry 🙂

Let's say I draw a spline sketch of some shape and I want to make my left side of the sketch symmetric with the right side.   Is that what that control does, and if so, how do I use it?  Every time I try to click on it, nothing happens and it's not obvious what I have to do next.

Thanks

Betty

Hi @itchytoes

Thank you for posting! Smiley Happy

if you want to use the symmetry option, you should have sketch entities at first. and then you will be able to use it.

Here is how to use symmetry option. please take a look at this.

If I missed something, please let me know.

Many thanks,

I made this screencast for someone else, the first few minutes show how to add symmetry constraints to a spline. The trick is to drag the handles so they change to light blue then you can add constraints to the end points.

Thanks for the replies.

I've only looked at the first one by @ahreum.ryu so far.

I studied the video and I got something to work by trying it out.

I had two sketch spline blobs and I was able to make points on the two blobs be symmetric.

What I'm confused about is the action of that constraint button.

At first, I thought I had to press it first before specifying the points, but it seems like all I have to do is select the two points, and then a center line and hit the button.

What confuses me now is that I seem to be in a "set-symmetry-mode" where I can continue doing this.

Then when I try it again, I can't make it work!  - in other words, pressing the two points then the center line and the symmetry button does nothing.

There's something I'm not doing correctly with that button and I think it's not intuitively obvious to me, or something.

Probably best to make a screencast so we can see what you're doing.

Hi --

Okay, after studying the @HughesTooling video, I think I got it.

So,  it seems like I have to have a line or something that I can use as the central line for the symmetry, and then I hit the Symmetry button first, then select my two points and my line and voila!

Now, my two other questions are:

(1) how do I get out of the symmetry mode?.   After I set my two points and line and create the symmetry, I click the symmetry button again and it is no longer darkened, but I seem to be always in a mode of setting symmetry, meaning that I can continue to set 2 points and a line and create symmetry.

(2) How do I clear symmetry between two points if I don't want it later?

Thanks

HI -

Okay,  I figured out how to remove the symmetry constraint all by myself

 (I'm so proud 🙂

I just click on the symmetry constraint symbol over the point and delete it.

You can cancel any of the drawing functions by right clicking and select Cancel from the right click menu or just press Esc on your keyboard.
