Sketching and extruding on curved surface

Hi all,

 

I am new to Fusion 360 and have been using a range of good videos to get me up and running but I haven't yet found out how to draw a construction line down the side of a disc (see pic). I have put construction lines at 72-degree angles on the top face so that I can then drop down verticles to where I need to pinpoint where to drill into the curved surface at the five points around the circumference. Each time I try to draw a line from the top surface to the bottom it seems to think I want a line out into the space in front instead of down the curved face.

 

The plan is that once I have those I can draw circles on the curved face and then extrude into the right depth.

 

You might also know a good guide video for such drawing activities?

 

Brilliant programme but just a lot of learn to become competent.

There are a few ways to drill radial holes. However you can't draw lines on a curved surface, only projections will do that.

 

From where you are at the moment, and depends on your design requirements, lets say you want the holes half way up/ Down the height if the cylinder.

 

create your current sketch on a mid plane or offset plane to your dimension, instead of the outside flat surface. When using circular patterns you only need one line, one hole.   Pattern 5 times.

 

when drawing your set up line, take it just outside the cylinder.

From here you can use the line for a pipe, cut with set diameter, easiest.

create a plane on path, and new sketch, draw the circle, extrude the circle as a cut, 

 

there may be other ways, as well, haven't mention Tangent plane, or hole command, o r Sweeps, till now.

 

With one hole done, circular pattern the feature you created, 5 or any other number, as desired.

Do you mean re draw the disc so that one of the origin planes is in the middle of the disc rather than on the bottom surface? Then I will have the origin plane running through the middle of the disc meaning I will have a centre plane at least for the holes. My verticles on the side were supposed to line up with the various angles around the circumference so that the radial holes would be in the right place.

 

Re the construction lines I think you mean extend them so I can create a perpendicular plane on them and then a circle to cut in  etc.

Thanks for this awesome video! Smiley Happy I was able to solution my design after watching it!

Here's a snapshot of the part I completed designing. I got stuck on projecting a circle to the irregularly curved surface. The offset plane with extrusion was able to get me past the hurdle!
