Sketch from "template"

Hi,

I'm really new to Fusion 360, and i'm just in the proces of creating my first project. I just want to say I really find the application fantastic. Though there is something I can't quite get my head around. I'm design a hand plane (woodworking tool), and i've got a pdf template of the handle in 1:1 scale. But I can't figure out I can import it into Fusion 360, so that I use it as drawing template in Sketch mode.

I tried drawing it in illustrator and then inserting it as a .svg og .dwg file (the .dwg failed when uploading it). But that was way too large and didn't keep the correct dimensions. I figure there must be a better way.

The templates I want to use are these: http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=63262

I hope it makes sense.

I'm glad you're enjoying Fusion 360 and thank you for the positive feedback!

If you are working with SVG, you can insert it inder the Insert menu. You can then calibrate the canvas with Fusion and this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqCgsphPYO4) shows you how to do that at about 4:30. That might be your best bet for now.

If you want to attach the DWG, I can take a look at bringing that into Fusion as well.

few tips:

1. break svgs up into paths (no groups compoind masks and such)

2. spread SVGs across artboards

3. save copy as SVG using artboards making 3 different files

in Fusion

1. load svgs into respective views

2. resketch svg import in new sketches for each view

this way you will have cleaner sketches and better modeling results

here are two videos:

however it is true that there seems to be a scale factor at work sadly

SVGs imported into Fusion have a scale factor they should be loaded as 1:1.

when you have svgs then using images as canvases is not very good

Calibrate was just what I was looking for. I tried scaling, didn't at all do the trick.

Thanks.
