Simulation of Jointed Assembly

Hello,

I am a confident Fusion 360 CAD and CAM user, and I recently found an application for the Simulation workspace. This is the first FEA that I have done and I was hoping for some advice and guidance. I have completed Sean Thomas' excellent course on Udemy, which I would highly recommend.

I am working on a device that will mount on a pickup truck and lift things up into the truck. It is powered by a hydraulic cylinder and consists of welded steel plates and tubing. There is some complex joinery to allow for the necessary range of movement.

I have the basic assembly/motion joints complete and would now like to test and optimize in Simulation. I have tried a couple of studies, but I am not sure how to verify that I am doing everything correctly. Here are a couple of questions that I have:

  1. Should I be completing simulations on the entire assembly, or would it be better to test each component individually?
  2. I am not sure that I am using the correct contacts on the pinned joints to most accurately represent the model.
  3. How would I test the simulation across the full range of motion of the mechanism?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have attached the basic assembly.

Thanks,
