Hi,

 

I am just starting to use Fusion 360 with some previous modeling experience.  I have watched all of the official tutorials for sketching and assembly.  I have an assembly of components and I want to make a new part that is a rectangular box.  So I made a sketch of a rectangle and tried to extrude it.  When it extrudes it doesn't have a top or bottom surface.  This happens on every box I make.  Any ideas?

Sounds like you might be in the patch workspace, try changing to the model workspace.

My whole assembly doesn't seem right I made it without joints just moving the parts around because I thought it might be quick and easy but it got a lot bigger and I'm going to have to re-do it with joints I think.

 

I've noticed the rectangles don't seem to be constrained although I think they should be, they are still blue lines.  

 

The opposing sides are vertically and horizontally contrained, the length of the two different sides are dimensioned, and there one dimension from each of the two different sides to lines I projected from other geometry.  To me this seems contstrained, the lengths of the lines, the angles of the lines, and the positions of th lines.  It happened the same when I made a 2nd sketch.  Do you know what this coud be?

I re-worked the assembly with joints.  I attached the model and pictures with part descriptions.

 

My question is, I have a 5-bar linkage mechanism, and I want to assemble the parts such that the geometry is correct, the lengths and angles between the links are as I calculated they should be, in the initial orientation of the assembly - how should I go about doing this in general?  I started with the mechanism grounded endpoints on axes and built inwards from both ends hoping to meet in the middle.

 

My current work is making the completed assembly using joints.  When I complete the joint for the middle link - LINK #2 to ROD END #3 - I choose cylindrical joint type to allow for length tolerance of the link length for now just to get the parts in the correct orientation.  What happens is when I make the cylindrical joint, ROD END #3 rotates to match LINK #2 as hoped for, but, the other items connected to ROD END #3 also rotate the same with it.  From ROD END #3, there is a revolute joint to ROD END #2, and ROD END #2 has a revolute joint to a spacer, and the spacer has a rigid joint to the BEARING SLIDER BLOCK.  The BEARING SLIDER BLOCK has a vertical sliding joint to the SLIDER RAIL.  The SLIDER RAIL component is chosen to be grounded from the browser list.  So I thought it wouldn't move when I add the revolute joint to ROD END #3.

 

The PIVOT BAR is grounded.  It has a revolute joint to LINK #3.  LINK #3 has a cylindrical joint to ROD END #4.  ROD END #4 has a cylindrical joint to LINK #2.  When I make the cylindrical joint from LINK #2 to ROD END #3 is when the other componenets attached to ROD END #3 rotate with it and they shouldn't because they are attached through joints to the grounded SLIDER RAIL component.

 

The mechanism works ike this:  The ROTATING HUB rotates and ROD END #1 rotates with it by revolute joint and is connected to LINK #1 by a rigid joint.  In the pictures LINK 1 is not yet connected to ROD END #1 as I have trouble doing this connection.  LINK #1 is connected to ROD END #2 by rigid joint also.  ROD END #2 pushes on the slider bearing block via a revolute joint, which slides down and moves ROD END #3 with it.  ROD END #3 is connected to ROD END #2 via revolute joint, athough in reaity there will be a bolt here that alows free rotation.  ROD END #3 moves downward and is connected to LINK #2 via rigid joint.  This connection is also not connected in the pictures due to the movement of the other components when the joint is made.  LINK #2 is connected to ROD END #4 via rigid joint, and pushes on LINK #3 via revolute joint.  LINK #3 is connected to the PIVOT BAR by a revolute joint, and the PIVOT BAR IS grounded.

 

So ...  my question is, is there a better or more correct approach to making the assembly?  How can I make new joints while preserving the prientations of the existing joints?  Should this be easy to do ?  Feel free to ask my any question.
