Ship Hull Modelling

Hello everyone Over the last few weeks I’ve been learning to use fusion to build parts for scale modelling of ships and fishing trawlers. I’ve been using Adobe Illustrator to design the frames for building a model fishing boat from plasticard, then this morning I had an idea…. What if I could design the hull of the trawler in fusion and then 3d print it!!! I’ve read online that its possible to save my drawings of the frames I’ve created in adobe illustrator as SVG files, import them into fusion and start lofting the hull. I had a little go at this a few weeks ago but the scaling between fusion and illustrator gave me some headaches. What’s the best way to approach this guys? What should be my order of work? I've attached the svg file of my frames if anyone would like to see what i'm working with. I’m still new to fusion and still fumbling my way around the program. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks for your time Martin

Can be done, lots of ways to tackle it.

AI svg files, can come into Fusion with size or scale errors, and when first inserted they are fixed in place, showing green lines and points.  Select all and unfix them.

That svg has more profiles in it than needed.

Loft Command can be finicky with rails.

Make half then mirror.

If it were me with those profiles, would extrude the floor out wider than the widest frame.  Patch Loft the sidewall, then thicken it, and trim the floor back to the wall.

Few pointers to think about, might help, and happy to answer question - better than rambling about things you have got sorted

Hello Guys

Thanks for the reply’s over the last few days on my current project. This afternoon I had a thought, what about using the sculpt module to create the hull of my trawler? So here’s attached a what I’ve done so far, I’ve managed to shape something similar to what I’m after. I imported into Fusion some drawings of a similar hull of another trawler. I used the lines plan to create a flat plane along the starboard side, starting at the waterline and going upwards to the top of the bulwark. I then pulled at the bow to get a shape close to what I was after.

When I was happy with this 2d shape I extruded it out 80mm, then cut the top and bottom off the circumscribing block. I then used the lines plan of the various waterlines looking down on the model from the top and pull some sort of shape into the design. What I’d like to achieve is a nice flared bow similar to the images of the actual trawler I’m wanting to build a model of, I’ve attached a couple of pictures of her back in the day. I hope to design the hull here in Fusion then 3d print the hull to create a waterline model of here at 1/35 scale. I’ve gotten close where I want to be but, there’s a little bit of a face that’s sticking out of the bow at the bottom, I don’t know how to get rid of this thing….

If anyone has any free time, could someone take a look at my project and point me I the right direction as to where to take this project. I’m still learning Fusion and my lack of knowledge is holding my back a little.

Thanks for looking guys.

Hello Everyone

Well i managed to create something in the way of a ships hull that I'l pleased with. I've converted the model into a solid ready to add the details to the hull.

The question I have is how do add details such as the rubbing strakes along the vessels side?

Can someone give me some pointers? As you can see the Crystal Sea has plenty of them in the attached photograph.

Thanks for looking

Create a 3d spline along the path of the rub rails/strakes. Create a 'Plane on path' at the end of the spline.  Create a sketch on the plane. Draw the profile of the rub rails/strakes. Use the Sweep tool to create the rub rails/strakes.  Repeat for each rub rail/strake.

Here's one way to do them:

If you use a circle as the profile, you can use the Split Body command to remove the portion inside the hull.

Hello Guys

@Beyondforce@etfrench thank you very much for your help over the lat few days, you guys have been great!!!

Heres my afternoons work completing the rubbing strakes on the hull, I'm sure you'll agree it looks fantastic!

My plan is still to use the split bodies to remove the inside wall of the strakes, but I may re-work the hull by thickening it first as I intend to 3d print this design and construct a waterline model of the Crystal Sea.

@Beyondforce if i were to send you some lines plan would you be able to put together a video on creating a hull design from a set of drawings of a trawler? I know of a number of people who'd find this very useful... I'm only just getting started with Fusion, i'm only a month into using the program..

Guys please send me your feedback i'd appreciate any pointers you have.

Take care

Martin
