selection problems for sketch lines and faces

hey all,

this is valid for the older versions and the update that came out yesterday.

when trying to select lines, points or faces on sketches I often have a really hard time. sometimes elements on a sketch aren't selectable at all. i then have to put the focus on something else, get back into the sketch and sometimes it works then.

also when trying to select a face for push/pull — let's say a circle on sketch — it's hard to select the right face because when you move the mouse only a pixel away the underlying face gets selected. I hope it's clear what I try to describe and others can confirm this too. maybe I could demonstrate this in a video if it's unclear.

Have you tried using selection filters?

to be honest: no. I will try it next time if such a problem occurs and update this thread about how it goes then.

I have noticed problems at times selecting sketch points, also.  A video would be helpful, yes, so that we can see exactly what you are seeing.

Have you used Select Other at all?  Hint:  Hold down the left mouse button, and the Select Other UI will appear.  I use that a lot to help navigate to an object that is not easily selected, especially for small faces or edges, without having to zoom way in...

Here we go for the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWSouSGjYbE&feature=em-upload_owner

I've really not used the Select Other so much yet as i didn't notice this would fit here but it does - at least as a work around. Maybe this should be more integrated ui wise?

One other thing i noticed and forgot to mention in the video: If you use window select to select a bunch of curves in a sketch the smaller ones often get ignored. Just try that out using a rectangle with fillet corners - zoom out a bit so the arcs on the corner are just a little smaller and they don't get selected when you draw the select window around all of the curves. You first don't see that but then if you probably delete or move the curves you notice that some parts are missing or still there after deletion.

Thanks for the video, Frank.  That is really bad...

For what it's worth (not much, I realize), I don't think that most others see this behavior.  The problems that I saw in your video:

1. the flickering (switching between selections) in press/pull.  The crucial piece of information (thank you) was that sometimes, changing the view can change the behavior.  I also noticed that you are on a Mac, and it looks like in perspective camera mode.  I tried all that on my Mac, though, and have not yet been able to reproduce it.  I will keep trying

2. In sketch mode, difficulty in selecting sketch geometry during dimensioning.  Even though you said you cannot reproduce it, I think you were showing some thing that looked wrong to me (the trouble selecting the vertical line when you created the angle dimension).  As I said, I sometimes have trouble selecting points, but I can see that it could extend to curves/lines as well.

You also mentioned window select and small curves.  I'd like to investigate that, as well.  I haven't seen that myself, but I don't doubt that the problem exists.  We just need to capture it...

Is there anything special about your setup?  What graphics effects do you have turned on?  Any other settings that might affect the results?  If you try orthographic camera mode, does that change the behavior at all?  (Not suggesting that as a solution, just trying to narrow down the problem so we can fix it).

Thanks,

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the video. It’s very helpful for us to understand what you experienced.

It seems the behavior is related to the “Select Through” option available from the Selection Filters dropdown on the toolbar.

I can see the flickering issue when the “Select Through” option is unchecked. I have reported this issue to development team for further investigation. (ID: FUS-9019)

As for the difficulty in selecting sketch geometry, I think it’s also related to the option. For example, when the option is disabled, if a sketch line is created inside of a body, it would be not selectable.

Could you try enabling the “Select Through” option and let us know if there is any different experience for the two issues?

Hi Jeff, Hi Nicolas,

first of all my setup:

i've seen this on 3 different Macs:

- iMac 2010 i7 ATI graphics, OSX 10.8

- MacBook Air (must bei 2010 oder 2011), intel HD4000 gfx, OSX 10.9 GM

- iMac 2012 i7 Nvidia GTX 680MX, OSX 10.9 GM

I've just tried switching display effects and views and this behaviour doesn't change in any way. Yes, i'm in the perspective view most of the time and i'm switching effects rather often because Fusion360 doesn't remember display settings per device but completely synchronises them. For example Antialiasing isn't that performant on the older iMac, therefore i switch it off and on again on the newer machine - so i have to switch it back next time on the older one. Even more drastic on the MacBook Air (which i use very rarely)

What really helped was switching on "Select through". That issue was completely gone when selecting this. I couldn't find out what this feature does which is probably the main reason i didn't even notice it so far. I haven't played with selection filters at all until now. Maybe i should get used to them.

Hi Frank,

Glad to know we find the root cause of the flickering issue. “Select Through” could be a work around, and we will investigate it further.

Hint:  “Select Through” allows the selection of entities which are hidden behind another object when checked.

As for the setting of graphics effects, I will highlight your case to the team and see if we can do something to improve the experience.

Thanks again for bringing this out. If you experience any other problems, please do let us know and we'll be glad to help.

I am waking this from the dead because I am having the problem where if I window select a bunch of geometry, small entities are ignored.  I'm on a mac too, a late 2013 MacBook Pro, decent machine.  The sketch I am fighting with is relatively complex as it is my company logo.  Someone else looked at this same file and didn't have the issue.

Before the window select, notice the s and h are all green..before selection.png

ater the window selection, notice the part of the h at the top that is still green.after selection.png

Anybody else seen this?  Anything I can provide to help investigate?  Turning on "select through" fixed the issue for me too, but I scratched my head for quite some time figuring that out.  Doesn't make sense as I am not selecting through anything.  May be some sort of tolerance thing.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for reaching out. I can reproduce the issue. It looks like to be related to the level of zoom in. The closer the geometries display, the less the geometries get ignored. I have asked the development team to look into it and see how we can improve this. (Tracking ID is FUS-16994).
