I feel like I've been able to do this is the past, seems really really basic. Am I doing something wrong? The only thing I changed recently (because of the relentless warnings and errors) was turning off parametric modelling. My modelling is very basic, and I have yet to start a project and finish it without running into these problems, yes this is "free", but I plan/hope to eventually make money using your product, but man, it's seeming less and less likely as I have yet to establish a consistent workflow due to all these issues. What am I missing?

I was out of town all weekend, so I'm just catching up on this thread.  Most of the important points have been covered, but I do have couple of comments:

 

  1. As @TrippyLighting says, if it were me doing this, I would do it all in one sketch.  Sketch operations such as trim or constraints only work on sketch objects that are in the active sketch.  You could say that is a limitation, but to me, it is kind of a scoping thing.  By restricting edit operations to objects in the active sketch, you prevent unintended edits to an "older" sketch, which may just happen to be visible.  One thing which may not be obvious to someone new to parametric design is that a single sketch does not have to be only a one-time use object.  I often put geometry for several features into one base sketch.  It doesn't work in all cases, but it will in this one:

  2. In the second video, where you show the trim problems with tangent lines and circle, this is a known problem.  To be honest, it's an accuracy issue.  The math around this kind of intersection is tricky (to be honest, the line and the circle it is tangent to don't really intersect at all, but I agree, the expectation is that trim should trim the circle in this case).  However, when I model, I rarely use trim at all.  I understand the desire for the sketch to be "clean", but it's not really necessary:


Anyway, hope you are able to stick with it, and discover all the different options in Fusion - you can do things a lot of different ways, and you just need to figure out what works for you.

Hi Jeff,

 

You recreated how I did it, would you have the time and be willing to show me how you would do it from scratch? But boarder that object in a box at the bottom, and have all 4 corners with that arc piece and sprinkle a couple of posts in the center portion? I would be very curious to see your resulting sketch and overall workflow (am I over using this term? am I using it right?). 

 

On a side note, do you guys have competitions to see who can model a given design the fastest? If the thread hasn't been started, I'll start it. As race cars slowly improve our cars, so would top modelers improve the CAD experience. Often I feel programmers don't really get to see their creations in action, especially something as comprehensive as this. Also, it would help people like me being able to see the fastest way of doing something.
