Selecting 3d Line

I have a file of a line which follows a 3d profile (not a sketch). I am trying to create an offset of this segmented line to cut a trim line in a model. I am unable to select all on this sketch to make a flat projection so I had to very tediously select every segment with the project tool and project the line onto an offset plane. Now, however, the sketch doesn't show as being closed. I have run around the projected sketch a couple of times very close and can find no breaks. At a bit of a loss now. Is there a way to offset a 3d line? If not is there a quick way to project the entire thing so I don't miss some minute segment?

Hi @JerryLJr,

Can you post your design here?  It's not completely clear to me what you are trying to do.   If we had the model, it would probably be easier to suggest a solution.

A couple of answers, though:

  • I am unable to select all on this sketch to make a flat projection so I had to very tediously select every segment with the project tool and project the line onto an offset plane

Yes, this is correct, unfortunately.  The Project command does not allow region or chain selection.  We did not implement this at first because you may end up with thousands of projected entities in your sketch, which would affect performance, and most users want to selectively project entities.  It's a good suggestion, however, and we'll keep it in mind for the future

  • Now, however, the sketch doesn't show as being closed.

For that one, we will need to see your design.  It is possible that some small gap exists

  • Is there a way to offset a 3d line?

No, there is no way to offset a 3d line today.

Jeff

@JerryLJr

Although technically you can't offset a 3d line there is a work around.

Switch to the patch environment and extrude the 3d line in the direction you want and use that extruded edge to create your offset line.

I can make a video if you want.
