Seeing all components

I'm trying to model something with four parts: two plastic disks, and a screw-and-nut pair that hold these together. I've modeled the screw (on top) as a pair of cylinders (the actual part is https://www.mcmaster.com/93121a320), and the "nut" (which appears to be called a barrel nut or sex bolt) as another pair of cylinders (below, quite faint). Screen Shot 2019-05-06 at 11.13.46 AM.png

I'd like to be able to see both as nice, opaque, shaded models, so that I can position them easily when I get around to making the plastic disks. (I'd also like to be able to NOT see them, but clicking on the little light-bulb icon in the list at the left seems to take care of that in general).

Can someone tell me how to see the not-active components fully rendered when I'm working on another component?

You can configure the behavior of this in the preferences by left-click on your name go to Preferences -> Design and uncheck the Active component visibility option. It's checked by default.

I would suggest this. I would simply activate the root component. You mentioned that you want to move things. I wouldn't do this. I would suggest to use the Assembly -> Joint command to solve the task.
