Scale a sketch non-Uniform?

Anonymous

Hello all!

This is probably a simple question.

I am trying to scale a sketch non-uniformly, but if I choose non-uniform in the scale dialog I can't choose a sketch - if I choose a sketch first, then I can't switch the scale type to non-uniform.

So, how would I go about scaling a sketch in a non-uniform way?

Thanks!

Autumn.S,

The short answer is no, not using the scale command itself.

This may be too much work, but you could create unitless parameters for ScaleX and ScaleY and make all sketch dimensions use them.

All dimensions in X direction would read "X.XX * ScaleX"

All dimensions in Y direction would read "X.XX * ScaleY"

You then could change X and Y scaling independently.

Thanks,

That would be a little hard to do in my case. Smiley LOL

Let me explain - I am creating some text that will be milled into a bit of wood.

The text is a few logos in a certain typeface (which I have successfully installed and used in Fusion) with one small caveat - the text is "squished" down/foreshortended.

This is my drawing of the first part of one logo - I sketched this using splines. Sketching each and every logo will be tedius, but if that is what I have to do, then I will.

I was hoping to use scaling to squish it but if I can't, then that's it. Smiley Tongue

Trying to constrain letters in order to use your method sounds like it would be difficult/impossible.

Is this (sketch scaling non uniformly) something that will be implemented eventually? Or should I create an Idea on the IdeaStation? Thanks!

Yes, you are correct, it would be messy to sketch text this way.

I'm not sure where this is on our roadmap, but I do know it's not a huge request, i.e. not a priority right now. Idea Station is always a good place for ideas, and we've been surprised before at the level of support some ideas receive... enough to move on them with higher priority.

That being said, many users have Illustrator for such things as font manipulation prior to use in Fusion. Is this possible for you? Perhaps there is an alternative app that can also do "text squishing" and export as DXF or SVG. Anyone else have a suggestion here?

Thanks,

You could extrude the letters as they are, then scale the extruded letters non-uniformly. You could make a new sketch from them if needed.

@donsmac

...That is brilliant.Smiley Surprised I just did that and it was a snap.

I feel silly for not thinking of it. Thanks so much! Smiley LOL

This is the way from MI to Ohio via IL but it works not sure if justified for all applications but, you can try it.

Create an extrude from a curve you want to scale. Non-Uniform Scale the solid. Project the new now scaled Edge of the solid w/no link (break link) to a new Sketch (in different plane than the one containing projected original curve/sketch.)

Hope this helps.

@AlDay101 -Did you happen to notice that the accepted answer from 4 years ago was identical to what yo just posted?
